The award-winning theatre youth group Indefinite Articles are behind this day out which gets youngsters playing with clay, moulding monsters and animating animals. The audience is also asked to come up with the characters and stories which are brought to life by the Claytime performers. Arts Depot, London, N12 0GA
10th April 2009 - 11th April 2009
London 2012 may be three years away but poet and performer Francesca Beard jumps the gun to give us the Animal Olympics; a track and field event for furry creatures with lively songs, stand-up and storytelling. This is an action replay of her appearance at last year's 'Imagine' Children's Literature Festival on the Southbank. Francesca once again introduces us to the rat, dragon, rabbit and tiger... in fact all the stars of the Chinese Zodiac. Audience interaction is positively encouraged as you decide who should be winning the medals.

Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela

Southbank Centre, London, SE1 8XX
14th-19th April 2009
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezula heads to the Royal Festival Hall for a five-day residency in which it will "seep like a liquid through every space" - according to Marshall Marcus, the Southbank Centre's head of music. The residency will see 'el Sistema' engage in a series of activities including two major concerts - their first in London since the overwhelming success of their BBC Proms debut in 2007 - two pre-concert talks and two open practice sessions. Both major concerts will be led by Gustavo Dudamel, described by Sir Simon Rattle as "the most astonishingly gifted conductor I've ever come across". Such is the popularity of this inspiring Venezuelan orchestra that these concerts are already sold out - but there remains the possibility of returns. One of the two public practice sessions may be your best bet to catch some action of the Orchestra in its entirety. Failing that, there are other events featuring members or small ensembles of musicians which are well worth a detour. On Friday 17th April there's a special lunchtime concert at 1.30pm for all the family when the orchestra performs a programme of popular classical music.

The Robot Zoo

Horniman Museum, London, SE23 3PQ
28th March - 8th November 2009
Camouflage yourself like a chameleon, hang like a bat and see how a squid uses its suckers at the interactive Robot Zoo at the Horniman Museum. There are eight larger than life mechanical creatures at the zoo, and each comes with a fun, hands-on way to help kids get to know them better. You can use a computer to colour the chameleon or the trigger gun to activate his sticky, insect-grabbing tongue. It's a great way to learn about nature, without seeing the real thing - after all, getting this close to a live rhinoceros would be a bit risky. The Horniman is putting on a series of special events this year to celebrate Darwin's 200th anniversary and The Robot Zoo ties in with the evolutionary theme.
