Bonfire Night & Fireworks in London
Bonfire Night & Fireworks in London
2010 marks the 405th anniversary of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot and with November 5th falling timely on a Friday there's a whole weekend of Bonfire Night celebrations to look forward to across the capital. Many of London's best known parks - from Ravenscourt Park in the west to Victoria Park in the east and Enfield Town Park in the north to Clapham Common in the south - host their own celebrations with bonfires, food stalls and funfairs as well as some awe-inspiring fireworks. The annual event in honour of Guy Fawkes' failed attempt to blow up Parliament is a great excuse to fire off a whole riot of rockets, as London's famous skyline is illuminated with welcome blasts of colour on a cold winter's night.

The History of Bonfire Night
"Remember, remember
The Fifth of November
Gunpowder treason and plot
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot..."

Friday 5th November 2010
Guy Fawkes NightLondon's biggest free fireworks display and fair takes place in Clapham Common on Bonfire Night - and this year it's set to be even bigger and better following the cancellation of the displays in neighbouring Brockwell Park and Streatham Common. Last year, around 100,000 people flocked to the Common to make the most of the party atmosphere, with fairground rides and food stalls running throughout the evening. Other free displays across London on Friday are by the Thames at Southwark and near the Westway in Ladbroke Grove. For under a fiver Fulham residents can attend the ever-popular display by the river in Bishops Park - and there's a similar set up for those who live in Kingston. For £5 you can experience one of London's oldest firework displays at Crystal Palace Park, now almost 150 years old, while for £7 you can take part in the pyrotechnics and funfair at Wimbledon Park.

Saturday 6th November 2010
Fireworks, funfairs and food stallsThe only free fireworks display in London on the Saturday after Bonfire Night is the massive extravaganza at Blackheath, which is going ahead this year despite Greenwich Council pulling its funding. Some 80,000 usually turn up for the annual family-friendly event, which is relying on guests making donations in advance or on the door. There are tons of other fireworks displays throughout the capital on Saturday, including fairground events in Morden Park, Barking Park and Ravenscourt Park (go easy on the toffee apples!), while the Enfield Town Park event - considered the best in North London - returns for a 36th year. At the Ealing Cricket Club the fireworks display will run alongside stirring, patriotic music with a nostalgic theme in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The Barnes fireworks display returns with its fabled Make-a-Guy competition, not to mention jazz and dancing in the local sports club, while last but not least, the popular Battersea Park event takes place, promising loads of food stalls, some feel-good fireworks and ample pyrotechnic pizzazz.

Sunday 7th November 2010
Bonfire weekend comes to an endThe vast majority of this year's fireworks come on Friday and Saturday nights, but there are a couple of events on Sunday - which is great if you're busy or out of town over the weekend and missed out on all the fiery fun. In the East there's the ever popular fireworks display in Victoria Park. This year's show is aptly named 'Remember, Remember' in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the start of the Blitz. Renowned pyrotechnicians Walk the Plank will dramatically light up the skies of East London with a unique and spectacular display accompanied by a soundtrack reminiscent of the era - although, sadly, there will be no food stalls or funfair ride this year. Meanwhile, in the other end of town in Richmond there's a large display at the Athletics Ground by Richmond Park, which also features a big bonfire, some fairground rides, a sumptuous hog roast and plenty of mulled of wine.

Lord Mayor's ShowFireworks at 5pm
The Lord Mayor's Show features possibly the most dangerous and amazing of all the public fireworks shows in the capital: river barges are piled high with explosives and set adrift on the Thames with several fearless firework-ers on board. This annual event has been taking over the streets of London for nearly 800 years now with a parade which involves over 6,000 people, military marching bands, Chinese acrobats, a procession of decorated floats and a gilded State Coach that the Lord Mayor travels in. The procession starts at 11am with an RAF flypast and goes on until about 2.30pm, covering the whole area between Bank and Aldwych with the mayor departing from Mansion House in a golden carriage for the Royal Courts of Justice where he takes an oath of allegiance to the Queen. Between the procession and the fireworks you can take part in a free guided walk which starts at 3pm departing from No 1 Poultry. It's a fun family day out but the grand finale is what really draws the crows - the day finishes with one of London's most impressive fireworks displays at 5pm, set off from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars Bridge and Waterloo Bridge. The best vantage points to watch from tend to be around Embankment and Gabriel's Wharf.
