Fireworks in London 2009
Bonfire Night brings a welcome blast of colour as thousands of fireworks explode over the city lighting up the skyline on a cold November night. The annual event in honour of Guy Fawkes' failed attempt to blow up Parliament is a great excuse to fire off a whole riot of rockets. Many of London's best known parks from Ravenscourt Park in the west to Victoria Park in the east host their own celebration with bonfires, food stalls and funfairs as well as some awe-inspiring fireworks.

Lord Mayor's Show Fireworks at 5pm The Lord Mayor's Show features possibly the most dangerous and amazing of all the public fireworks shows in the capital: river barges are piled high with explosives and set adrift on the Thames with several fearless firework-ers on board. This annual event has been taking over the streets of London for nearly 800 years now with a parade which involves over 6,000 people, military marching bands, Chinese acrobats, a procession of decorated floats and a gilded State Coach that the Lord Mayor travels in. The procession starts at 11am with an RAF flypast and goes on until about 2.30pm, covering the whole area between Bank and Aldwych with the mayor departing from Mansion House in a golden carriage for the Royal Courts of Justice where he takes an oath of allegiance to the Queen. It's a fun family day out but the grand fireworks finale is what really draws the crowds - the day finishes with one of London's most impressive fireworks displays at 5pm, set off from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars Bridge and Waterloo Bridge. Anywhere along the river is a good place to watch from but the best vantage points tend to be around Victoria Embankment and Gabriel's Wharf on the South Bank. Venue: Lord Mayor's Show Address: Blackfriars Bridge to Waterloo Bridge | Victoria Embankment, EC4V 3QR Time: 11am-5pm | Procession 11am-2.30pm, Fireworks 5pm Price: FREE Nearest Station: Temple Tube |
