Tower Bridge, Tower Bridge Road, Bankside, London, SE1 2UP

Tube: London Bridge Station

Dates: 27th June 2013

More people have walked on the moon than have successfully rowed around Great Britain's coastline - and this, the world's richest rowing race, looks to overturn that striking anomaly. As many as 15 boats are expected to take part in the gruelling 2,000 mile race, which is organised by the Anglo American Boat Club and starts at Tower Bridge on 1st June. Chasing a bounty of £100,000, crews of two, four or eight oarsmen and women will brave treacherous tides and some of the most dangerous shipping lanes on the planet as they row non-stop and unassisted from London, around Land's End, up to John o' Groats and back to the capital.

The Perfect American

A disturbing fictional view of Walt Disney's final years.

London Coliseum - English National Opera (ENO), St Martin's Lane, Covent Garden, London, WC2N 4ES

Tube: Charing Cross Station , Leicester Square Station, Covent Garden Station, Embankment Underground Station

Dates: 01st - 28th June 2013

Making its London debut, Philip Glass's 2011 opera is a fictionalised vision of Walt Disney's last few years, seen from the perspective of a disgruntled former employee. The opera opens with a scene around Disney's death bed and progresses into a flashback that includes surreal imaginings of Abraham Lincoln and Andy Warhol – representing the unimaginable and, at times, disturbing aspects of Disney's life and American culture. For spurious legal reasons, the theatre company has created sinister interpretations of Mickey, Minnie and friends - recognisable, but "in a nightmarish sort of way".

Sweet Bird of Youth

Marianna Elliott directs Kim Cattrall, who takes on the role of a fading Hollywood star.

Old Vic Theatre, 103 The Cut, South Bank, London, SE1 8NB

'Sex and the City' star Kim Cattrall takes on the role of fading Hollywood legend Alexandra Del Lago in Tennessee Williams's 'Sweet Bird of Youth', directed by Marianne Elliott, co-director of 'War Horse'. Appearing at The Old Vic for the first time, Cattrall has already proved her mettle on stage, last appearing in the West End in 2010 in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives', a production that subsequently transferred to Broadway. Reviewing the play, Charles Spencer, writing in The Telegraph, was reminded of, "the kind of woman Marilyn Monroe might have become had she lived a little longer..." - just the kind of woman well suited to playing a fading Hollywood legend.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters

The legendary singer performs a live concert with a difference.

Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gore, South Kensington, London, SW7 2AP

Tube: South Kensington Station

Dates: 04th - 05th June 2013

Fresh from the success of last year's 'Revolver' tour, legendary genre bending musician Elvis Costello returns to the Royal Albert Hall with his band The Imposters for a fresh whirl of his gigantic vaudevillian 'Spectacular Spinning Songbook'. Part of the prolific Costello's new '13 Revolvers' tour, the concept is deliciously simple: after each performed number, the band members or members of the audience spin a wheel packed with different songs from throughout Costello's career; whichever song comes up next, The Imposters perform.  "Inspiring and invigorating", says The Los Angeles Times.

Opera Holland Park

An exciting musical line-up that's performed among the tree-tops.

Holland Park Theatre, Holland Park, Holland Park, London, W8 6LU

Tube: Kensington (Olympia) Station

Dates: 04th June - 03rd August 2019

Holland Park and operatic arias soar over the tree-tops. The magical atmosphere of these productions owes a lot to their surroundings but it's also a tribute to a remarkable opera company that has defied expectations and budgets to put on productions of the very highest standard. The 2013 season starts with a double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, in which conductor Stuart Stratford teams up with Oliver award winning director Lindsay Posner to stage a new production, creating a promisingly strong start to the season. It continues with 'Madama Butterfly', Puccini's much loved tragic opera, and the relatively unknown 'I gioielli della Madonna' by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari in which Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw is among the talented young cast. Also on the bill are 'Les pecheurs de perles' by Bizet, and Donizetti's 'L'elisir d'amore'.

Patrick Caulfield

30 paintings by the 'formal artist' are on display at Tate Britain.

Tate Britain, Millbank, Westminster, London, SW1P 4RG

Tube: Pimlico Station

Dates: 04th June - 08th September 2013

Tate Britain presents a survey exhibition of the celebrated British painter, Patrick Caulfield, who came to prominence in the 1960s. Caulfield trained at the Royal College of Art, where he was a year behind Hockney, and despite appearing in the defining 'New Generation' exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1964, he preferred not to be labelled a pop artist, instead he saw himself as "a 'formal' artist". Known for his vibrant paintings of modern life, around 30 of which are shown in this exhibition, Caulfield was a master of colour and graphic elegance. Highlights of the exhibition include well-known paintings such as Interior with a Picture 1985-6, and Hemingway Never Are Here 1999. The Caulfield exhibition runs in parallel with an exhibition on Gary Hume, offering visitors the chance to see two complementary British painters from different generations.

Gary Hume

This display of work from the leading British artist coincides with Patrick Caulfield's exhibition.

Tate Britain, Millbank, Westminster, London, SW1P 4RG

Tube: Pimlico Station

Dates: 04th June - 08th September 2013

English painter, draughtsman and printmaker Gary Hume emerged as one of the leading figures of the group of young artists labelled the YBAs (Young British Artists) in the 1990s. He graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1988 and his work appeared in the seminal 'Freeze' show that same year. Tate Britain stages a show on the artist who represented Britain at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 and more recently filled the White Cube, Mason's Yard and Hoxton Square with his 'Paradise Paintings' and limestone sculptures. Visitors can double up with the Patrick Caulfield exhibition (see above) and take in the works of two influential contemporary British artists in one day.

The community minded summer festival returns with small scale classical, folk and contemporary music held in a splendid variety of performance spaces. Shoreditch's hip Village Underground holds some of the more contemporary offerings, and there could not be a more apt setting for city-based bucolic folk than the Spitalfields City Farm. The eclectic programme includes lashings of baroque, jazz and world music, while there is a series of talks and debates, walks and visits, and interactive workshops.

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013: Sou Fujimoto

Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto is the 13th and, at 41, youngest architect to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion.

Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, South Kensington, London, W2 3XA

Multi award-winning Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto is the thirteenth and, at 41, youngest architect to accept the invitation to design a temporary structure for the Serpentine Gallery. Typically, a world-renowned architect is tasked with creating a structure which temporarily occupies the lawns in front of the gallery. For the 2013 commission Sou Fujimoto creates a delicate, three-dimensional structure which merges the surrounding plant life together with the construction made of fine steel bars - merging the natural and the man-made. Sou Fujimoto joins past alumni including last year's pairing of Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, the team behind the highly acclaimed Beijing National Stadium; and the Olympic Aquatics Centre architect Zaha Hadid who was the first to create such a pavilion back in 2000.

Controversy reigned at last year's Queen's Club Championships when Argentinian David Nalbandian was disqualified in the second set of the final for kicking a court side advertising board, resulting in a nasty cut leg for a line judge. In rather anti-climactic scenes the towering Croatian Marin Cilic, who lost the opening set, was awarded the win. The Championships attract most of the world's top grass court players to the prestigious Queen's Club, whose courts have been described by four-time former winner Andy Roddick as "arguably the best in the world".

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

The largest regular contemporary art exhibition in the world allows anyone to submit work.

Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington House, Mayfair, London, W1J 0BD

Tube: Green Park Station , Piccadilly Circus Station

Dates: 10th June - 12th August 2019

Anyone can submit to the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition which gives it a wonderful element of surprise. Over 11,000 pieces are sifted through, from relative unknowns to famous artists and members of the RA. The fun part for visitors is choosing a favourite and, with the majority of works on sale at varying price ranges, you can even buy one if you really fall in love with it. First held in 1769, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is the largest regular contemporary art exhibition in the world. It's an impressive show that gives an excellent cross-section of contemporary art every summer. Each year, a prominent sculpture greets visitors to the exhibition as they walk through the Royal Academy's great courtyard; last year Chris Wilkinson's 'From Landscape to Portrait', a twisting series of wooden frames, offered weary visitors a welcome seat.

The Taming of the Shrew

An all-female cast performs Shakespeare's battle of the sexes play.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, 21 New Globe Walk, Bankside, Bankside, London, SE1 9DT

Tube: Mansion House Station

Dates: 10th - 21st June 2013

An all-female cast performs Shakespeare's outrageous comedy The Taming of the Shrew at the Globe Theatre. In the Bard's celebrated battle of the sexes play, two wealthy sisters in Padua must be married off - with two competing suitors striving to gain the hand of the beautiful Bianca. But what will become of the wild, ungovernable, 'shrewish' Katherina? The contrasting sisters' father will not allow Bianca to date until her older sister also starts dating. Perhaps the gold-digging Petruchio - as maddeningly strong-willed and perverse as Katherina herself - will be equal to the task of succeeding where all others have failed and bully her to the altar. Audiences have delighted through the ages as these two hot-tempered livewires battle to confuse and outwit each other right up to the play's controversial conclusion. This small-scale touring production of The Taming of the Shrew should compliment the Rose Theatre Kingston's all-male cast of the same play earlier in the year.

Dates: 14th - 26th June 2013

In the year of Benjamin Britten's centenary, the ENO will be staging his much admired final opera 'Death in Venice'. Two unspoken themes run throughout the opera: the unrequited love that Aschenbach, an old guest at a Venice hotel, has for the young and athletic Tadzio, and the cholera epidemic that the authorities are desperately trying to keep quiet. The physical decay of the city and the mysterious, sinister characters that Ashenbach meets on his daily travels add up to a haunting theatrical narrative that explores what moral and ethical repercussions can be caused by unarticulated love.

Bruce Springsteen

The Boss plays material from his latest chart topping album.

Wembley Stadium, Empire Way, Wembley, London, HA9 0WS

Tube: Wembley Park Station

Dates: 15th June 2013

The Boss dons his famous double denim combo and heads to Wembley for a night of heartland rock with his E Street Band. Following unforgettable performances in Hyde Park in 2009 and 2012, bandana-boasting Bruce will play material from his latest chart topping five star album, 'Wrecking Ball', as well as pounding out some of his iconic hits, which include 'Born in the USA', 'Dancing in the Dark' and 'Born to Run'. Let's hope the promoters don't pull the plug on Springsteen like they did last summer, cutting short his pre-Olympic jam with Sir Paul McCartney. Quite likely one of the reasons why music festivals like Hard Rock Calling - where Bruce Springsteen headlines this summer - have bid farewell to Hyde Park and moved east to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Returning to our shores once again, the sexy Barbadian will be performing at Twickenham Stadium this June as part of her 'Diamonds' world tour.

Fences tours the UK before opening in London's West End in June at the Duchess Theatre. The action takes place in Tudor England as Queen Elizabeth I is approaching the end of her reign and has to balance her amorous feelings towards the Earl of Essex with his own mounting ambitions.

Murray has often carried the weight of history into the Wimbledon fortnight, and last July he looked well on track after taking a masterful first set against Roger Federer in the final. But the Swiss maestro rallied to take the match 3-1 and tie Pete Sampras's record seven Wimbledon wins. A month later, Murray's tears turned to jubilation when the 25-year-old gained revenge over Federer in the Olympic final on Centre Court, following it up with victory over Novak Djokovic in the US Open final. On such a roll, Murray could well enter the tournament as favourite - while in the women's competition, reigning champion Serena Williams will eye a sixth SW19 title.
