The scent of jasmine hangs in the air at The Mandrake, a 34-room independent boutique hotel set around central courtyard surrounded by hanging gardens. Set up by entrepreneur Rami Fustok, a Londoner born in Beirut and the son of sculptor Bushra Fakhoury, the hotel has been inspired by the medicinal properties of the Mandrake plant. Design touches have a slightly narcotic bent, hinting at the aphrodisiac. This is bourne out in the priceless art collection which includes works by Francesco Clemente, Jonas Burgert and Peter-John de Villiers among others, soundscapes come from French sound engineer Pierre-Arnaud Alunni and scents from Azzi Glasser. The hotel hosts an 'Artist in Residence' with Mark Mahoney, one of Hollywood's top tattoo artists, the first to hold the position. A basement screening room and restaurant from the team behind Hong Kong's Michelin-starred Serge et le Phoque complete the package.

'Angel of the North' artist Antony Gormley has created an incredible inhabitable sculpture of a crouching man on the side of The Beaumont, a 75-room boutique hotel in Mayfair owned by Jeremy King and Chris Corbin. The sculpture isn't the only noteworthy work of art. The building itself is a 1920's Art Deco structure originally used as a garage. King and Corbin, who have made their name with top notch eateries like The Wolseley, The Ivy and Le Caprice have spent £40 million doing the place up. The result is a spectacular hotel with a royal suite, Colony Grill Room restaurant, a small private private dining room, American lobby bar, spa and leisure facilities as well as a unique work of art.
