London's department stores are the complete one-stop shopping experience, selling just about everything under the sun. Each has their own speciality - House of Fraser, clothes, John Lewis, homeware, Fortnum & Mason, food - but they all stock a vast range of goods. If you want to take advantage of the sales but don't have the energy for trudging from shop to shop they're ideal. Many of them even have cafes and restaurants where you can rest and refuel mid-shop, not to mention the Selfridges champagne bar...

The cosmetics hall is a godsend of pampering for the girls, and, if you can manage any more culinary indulgence, the food hall offers some sumptuous treats. Of course, aside from the sheer elegance and extravagance of Harvey Nichols, it's full of fashionistas gorging themselves on the most outrageous new styles, so even if you can't afford to buy much, it can still be an entertaining experience.
