Russell Brand: Messiah Complex

Brand discusses the cult of celebrity, Jesus, the Daily Mail and David Cameron.

Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Catherine Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2B 5JF

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Holborn Station, Temple Station

Dates: 02nd March 2014

He's no stranger to being in the tabloids, but in late 2013 Russell Brand ended up in a very public spat with one. After the Sun on Sunday accused Brand of cheating on his girlfriend, the comedian hit back by writing a piece for the Guardian that slammed The Sun and its immoral lies, and compared Rupert Murdoch to Hitler. This prompted The Sun to retaliate with'20 Reasons why Russell Brand is the biggest hypocrite in Britain' - and so the tit for tat continued. So, bringing his Messiah Complex tour to London in early 2014, a slight adjustment to Brand's material could be predicted. In the show, the insightful and irreverent comedian discusses the cult of celebrity personality and touches on historic figures Jesus Christ, Ghandi, Malcolm X and Hitler while also discussing the controlling power of likes of the Daily Mail, Fox News and David Cameron - perhaps the perfect opportunity to take one final swipe at The Sun.

Ruin Lust

The aesthetic potency of ruins through British art from the 17th century to the present day.

Tate Britain, Millbank, Westminster, London, SW1P 4RG

Tube: Pimlico Station

Dates: 04th March - 18th May 2014

What is it about ruins that makes them so endlessly fascinating and so powerfully moving? The 18th century was mad about them (painting romantic pictures of them and even going as far as having decorative ruins built as features the grand landscapes of stately homes). In the 19th century they were associated with the dark effects of industrialisation and the end of the old way of life. And in the 20th century they held memories of world wars and economic decline. In this exhibition, Tate Britain explores the aesthetic potency of the ruin and the theme of ruination through British art from the 17th century to the present day, where a ruin is at once an echo of the past and a glimpse of the future. Artists on show include celebrated painters such as Turner (Tintern Abbey) and Constable (Hadleigh Castle), who would tour Britain in search of picturesque landscapes, to contemporary artists such as Tacita Dean, Rachel Whiteread and Jane & Louise Wilson.

Formerly the NatWest Tower, the 600-foot Tower 42 and its 920 steps is the venue for what The Times describes as "a race for sporting masochists". The Guardian shares its rival paper's opinion, a participating reporter claiming that the closing stages of last year's inaugural event felt like "breathing in fumes piped directly from a Routemaster's exhaust pipe". So, easy it ain't; but the views from the top are rather spectacular - and it's all for a good cause, with around £300,000 being raised for housing and homelessness charity Shelter. Just don't take climbing 42 flights of stairs too lightly - even fitness fanatics will have their work cut out so make sure you stop taking the lift at work for a few weeks preparation before.

In doing so, her films and texts challenge and question our own accepted sources of knowledge and information.

Tube: Brixton Station

Dates: 06th March 2014

HAIM started the year by topping the BBC Sound of 2013 poll and finished it with a number one debut album and a UK tour - not bad for a trio of sisters who started out as a cover band with their parents. After gaining the BBC accolade back in January, the Californian siblings took their time releasing their debut album, which eventually took to the charts in September. However, with their impressive EP Forever and a strong, sexy stage presence, they succeeded in maintaining public interest and when their album, Days Are Gone - referencing the amount of time it took to produce- was eventually released, it didn't disappoint. NME hailed it 'one of the best pop albums you'll hear all year' while the Guardian said it confirmed them as a sure thing. Part of their 2014 European tour, the girls will be stopping by O2 Academy Brixton for one night to perform their hits and no doubt flirt outrageously with the audience.

Transferring direct from the West End, Priscilla Queen of the Desert runs for five nights at the New Wimbledon Theatre this March. Two transvestites and a transsexual, heading deep into Australian redneck territory in a bus called Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, it's a recipe for a hit musical. The original movie was ripe for an uber-camp stage version - in Sydney cinemas, it played in 'dragarama', with a glitter ball and dancing in the aisles - and this production doesn't disappoint. It's been Australia's most successful musical of all time, with two years of packed houses and audiences on their feet for disco numbers including Downtown, Venus, Go West, I Will Survive, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Hot Stuff and We Belong. The dialogue is even ruder than in the movie, the costumes more extravagant and Priscilla herself a six tonne prop covered in almost a thousand LED lights.

Simon Munnery has always had a fairly anarchic approach to comedy, one that doesn't show any sign of abating as he matures. His latest show Fylm, is just that. Sort of. Well, it's live comedy, but performed in a box and witnessed by the audience via video line and amplified into a huge projection of Munnery's face as he performs. Film? TV? Comedy? Performance art? However, unbeknownst to him, his music had gained mass popularity in South Africa, with some of the tracks becoming anti-Apartheid anthems. In South Africa meanwhile, it was widely believed that Rodriguez had committed suicide - that was until two fans of his set upon finding what really happened and made the astonishing discovery that Rodriguez was in fact alive and well. This resulted in Rodriguez travelling to South Africa to perform a number of emotionally charged concerts, and has since gone on to find fame all around the world. RCA Secret

The chance to get your hands on a piece of genuine art by a bona fide artist for a mere £45.

Royal College of Art, Dyson Building, 1 Hester Road, Battersea, London, SW11 4AN

Tube: South Kensington Station

Dates: 12th - 20th March 2015

The RCA Secret show, held at the college's Dyson Building in Battersea, is that rarest of artistic events - a chance to get your hands on a piece of genuine art by a bona fide artist for a mere £45. The way it works is simple. You go to one of the viewing days, look at the postcards which have been sent in by all sorts of people (famous artists, celebrities, artists in training and talented but not well known artists), then return on the sale day and purchase the ones you liked - for £45 a pop. The catch is that you can't tell who did the postcard until after you've shelled out your dosh, so you might come home with a Hirst original or, well... you might not. It's an opportunity to flex your artistic knowledge, pick up a bargain and invest in the future of the RCA (because it's all for charity, folks). So if you reckon you can tell your Opie from your Emin, head down to the RCA (or view online) and see what you can pick up but you will need to register in advance to buy. If you're dead set on a particular postcard, get there before the doors open at 8am when the buying starts. If you're a little more relaxed, leave it until later; the queue usually disappears by around midday.

Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, South Bank, London, SE1 8XX

Tube: Waterloo Station , Embankment Underground Station

Celebrating the complete restoration and return of the Royal Festival Hall's organ, the Southbank Centre is hosting Pull Out All The Stops - An Organ Celebration, which also marks the instrument's 60th anniversary. First installed in 1954, the Hall's magnificent organ originally took four years to build and became an integral part of the venue. However, during the Royal Festival Hall's 2005 refurbishment, only one-third of the organ was restored which resulted in the instrument being unable to perform the complete orchestral and solo repertoire for which its design originally allowed. Fortunately, as a result of the Pull Out All The Stops campaign which raised £2.3million, the organ has been fully restored and audiences will be able to hear the whole instrument for the first time since 2005. For the celebration, the Southbank Centre has commissioned eight new works by the likes of John Tavener, Peter Maxwell Davies, Martin Creed and Simon Holt. The opening gala on 18th March will feature organists John Scott, Isabelle Demers, Jane Parker Smith and David Goode, while celebrity recitals during the festival include performances by John Scott, Olivier Latry and Thomas Trotter. There will also be the chance to hear major works performed by Southbank Centre's Resident Orchestras in the Royal Festival Hall for the first time in almost a decade.

The clever script, based on a true story, reveals what happened when Banksy sprayed 'This Looks a bit like an elephant' on an old water tank in LA. Roundhouse CircusFest

Vaudeville, circus and cabaret come to the Roundhouse for five weeks of aerial daring and acrobatics.

Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, London, NW1 8EH

Tube: Chalk Farm Station

Dates: 03rd April - 06th May 2018

Vaudeville, circus and cabaret come to the Roundhouse for a five week season of CircusFest, as a colourful mix of renowned theatre companies and circus groups take to the stage. There are performances from the likes of La Meute, masters of the seldom seen Russian Swing; Company 2, the company behind the international smash-hit Cantina; and an exciting new collaboration between a group of world-class circus performers and a brilliant young LGBTQ cast who perform the world premiere of Puffball. Performances will also be taking place away from the main house, in various venues including a pop-up tent where the UK premiere of Capilotractees, a show inspired by the old and forgotten circus art of hair hanging, takes place. It's also host to the world premiere of Belonging, a new collaboration between UK company Graeae and Brazil's Circo Crescer e Viver, featuring performers from the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony and Brazilian actors, musicians and dancers being trained for the Rio 2014 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony. This pretty much sets the tone for what to expect from CircusFest - something a bit crazy, anarchic and high octane.

Rebel Bingo

This risqué club night dispels the myth that bingo is just for the golden oldies.

Dispelling the myth that bingo is a pastime only for the golden oldies, Rebel Bingo has taken the game into unknown territory: London's nightlife scene. Having previously taken place at venues such as Scala and the Forum, it now moves to Electric Brixton for the final London shows before November. It's risqué, it's crude and, being honest, it's only loosely based around bingo. The night does welcome a ringleader and his assistants, all of whom will be dressed to the nines in Lady GaGa-esque attire, to call out numbers in a fashion that would make your Granny squirm, and it boasts a number of kitsch prizes. However, the main event is the party. With music, cocktails, burlesque performers and a carnival atmosphere that continues past any community centre's closing hours, this is quite simply an intoxicating and hedonistic evening with the addition of a few bingo balls.

Named after the Harlem area code 212 and featuring the rapper Lazy Jay, the song showcased Banks' versatility and unpredictably vocal range - even if most people will remember it for her astonishing array of expletives and attitude. Since 212 propelled Banks to instant stardom, she has topped NME's 'Cool List' and been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2012 - and she's still yet to release and album. Her debut, Broke With Expensive Taste is set for release in January 2014, making this rescheduled Brixton gig perfectly timed.

Tube: Mornington Crescent Station , Camden Town Station, Camden Town Station

Dates: 31st March 2014

BANKS, the LA born singer-songwriter, may have only released her first official single in February last year, but it certainly was a busy year.
The 25-year old went on to release her first EP Fall Over in March 2013, tour with The Weeknd in the UK and the US, release a second EP in September. Her headline show at Shoreditch Town Hall fully sold out in just two hours. And if that wasn't enough, she was nominated and finished in third place for the BBC Sound of 2014.
Her sound, she says, has a "dark bluish back with smoke and chants and fire and heart", and Lauryn Hill and Fiona Apple are major influences. It looks as though 2014 could be another busy year.
