A brand new artwork by 'Tank Girl' and 'Gorillaz' co-creator, Jamie Hewlett, featuring a sassy new female character is unveiled in this major exhibition, the UK's biggest show of British comics, at the British Library which explores some of the darker and more complex themes to emerge from the UK's rich tradition of comic books and graphic art. While Comics Unmasked examines some of the early precursors to the British comic tradition such as William Hogarth, George Cruickshank and Punch magazine, it mainly focuses on post-war material such as The Beano, Viz, Action and Eagle but also looks at the counterculture tradition of the 1970s as well as the pioneering work of Alan Moore, Bryan Talbot, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison, who helped redefine the intellectual and artistic possibilities of the form with their revolutionary work on 2000AD, Watchmen, Batman, From Hell and many others. The exhibition therefore demonstrates that the UK was both an early innovator of comics as well as an ongoing leader in the field.

From its roots in African and Spanish cultures - there's a clever fusion at the beginning - to the full flavour of salsa, rumba and cha-cha-cha, the women delight in their sultry selves and the men are men. Tube: Hounslow East Station

Dates: 16th - 17th May 2015

Head down to the home of English rugby this May as Twickenham opens its doors to some of the world's finest rugby talent from 16 international teams for the London Sevens. The two-day tournament is a great chance to experience a sport whose popularity is growing fast. Sevens is quicker and higher-scoring than Union or League rugby (think Twenty20 cricket) and the rules are far simpler, which explains part of its appeal. It also gives players the space for superb feats of individual skill, with the athletic Samoan, Fijian and New Zealand teams particularly prone to spectacular showboating. There are plenty of well-timed breaks so you can hit the bar for some liquid refreshment and soak up some of the extra entertainment. It's also much cheaper than the 15-a-side version, which is always a bonus, and there's a distinctive carnival atmosphere to these events with spectators often sporting a superb array of comedy fancy dress outfits.

Puccini's most famous opera, based on the play La Tosca by French dramatist Sardou, contrasts the passion of lovers Mario Cavaradossi and Floria Tosca with the lust of Baron Scarpia. "Handsome and traditional" says the Financial Times, "Opera with a capital O", says the Arts Desk.

Bakersfield Mist

Kathleen Turner returns to the London stage, starring opposite Ian McDiarmid.

Duchess Theatre, Catherine Street, London, WC2B 5LA

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Temple Station

Dates: 10th May - 30th August 2014

Maude has bought a painting from a thrift shop, and despite nearly destroying it, she believes it maybe a Jackson Pollock. An art expert, played by Ian McDiarmid, arrives in Bakersfield to authenticate it, but has no idea what he is about to truly discover. Producer Nica Burns told BBC News, "the chemistry between these two great stage actors was thrilling" at an early read through of the play.

Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival

The annual celebrations in Covent Garden that draw in puppeteers from all over the country.

St Paul's Church, Covent Garden, Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9ED

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Leicester Square Station, Charing Cross Station, Embankment Underground Station

Dates: 13th May 2018

This annual Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival celebrates the red nosed stick-wielding puppet, bringing together dozens of puppeteers in a colourful, highly entertaining afternoon. The annual celebrations in Covent Garden draw puppeteers from all over the country as well as folk music, dancers, clowns, jugglers and stalls. The location is appropriately close to the spot where Samuel Pepys first sighted Mr Punch on 9th May 1662 and recorded the fact in his diary - which is why the birthday celebrations fall on or near to 9th May. The day's events start with a toast to Mr Punch, and a brass band led Grand Procession starting at St Paul's Church garden, a beautiful little oasis in the city centre. There follows a special service with a sermon administered by Rev Mark Oakley and Mr Punch himself. An integral part of British heritage, the puppet with attitude is a wonderful, anarchic figure and this is a top traditional family day out.

McDermott's new production at the London Coliseum features a strong cast led by Kate Valentine (Mimi in last year's La boheme) and internationally renowned mezzo Christine Rice as the duped fiancees, while baritone Roderick Williams (Medea, Sunken Garden) plays the cynical Don Alfonso. Underpinning it all is Mozart's sublime score, which ebbs and flows with the tide of emotions from the serenity of Soave sia il vento to the sorrow of E amore un ladroncello.

Some of the largest creatures to ever walk the earth will be the subject of Mammoths: Ice Age Giants at the Natural History Museum. And a 37,000 year old baby mammoth, Lyuba (pronounced Looba), the most complete woolly mammoth ever found, on display in Europe the first time, takes pride of place in the ice age exhibition. You can see huge fossils and life-size models of mammoths and square up to the powerful trunks and tusks of these great beasts. Visitors will also be able to try out life as a mammoth: tusk jousting, trunk moving and feel the weight of the hundreds of kilogrammes of food a mammoth ate each day, equivalent to 230 bags of sugar. The exhibition will also study the latest research into the causes of mammoth extinction and look at ways to protect their precious modern relative, the elephant.

The Animals and Children Took to the Streets

A wonderfully original piece of theatre reminiscent of the early black and white Buster Keaton films.

National Theatre: Lyttelton Theatre, South Bank, London, SE1 9PX

Tube: Temple Station , Waterloo Station

Dates: 23rd - 26th May 2014

Avant-garde theatre quartet 1927 returns to the National Theatre following two sell-out runs here to present The Animals and Children Took to the Streets, a show featuring storytelling, animation, live music and performance, set in a slum tenement block. Created by the company's co-founders, poet Suzanne Andrade and film-maker Paul Barritt, the show uses live music, performance and storytelling, film and animation to create a wonderfully original piece of theatre reminiscent of the early black and white Buster Keaton films. Riddled with animated cockroaches who crawl over the actors, it's as if the actors are trapped in the animations. "The show feels like a heady mix of Berlin cabaret, silent movie and social commentary," said Michael Billington in The Guardian, reviewing The Animals and Children... when it appeared at the National's Cottesloe in 2011. Age guidance: 11 years and above.

The Gruffalo

Infectiously catchy songs, superb dance routines and non-stop drama.

Rose Theatre, 56 Park Street, Bankside, London, SE1 9AS

Tube: London Bridge Station

Dates: 27th May - 01st June 2014

The Gruffalo is a classic that kiddies just love and this is the perfect opportunity to see it if you missed its run at Lyric Hammersmith earlier in the year. The loveable little mouse will once again be taking a 'stroll through the deep, dark wood'. Threatened by various predators, a snake, an owl and a gruffalo with ''terrible tusks and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws'', the mouse outwits them all. The plot is enchanting and is told by Tall Stories with a winning simplicity. The cast of three manage to transform the stage with remarkably few props and a host of infectiously catchy songs, not to mention some superb dance routines and non-stop drama. Many of the memorable lines become catchphrases and are repeated throughout the show in a bid to appeal to the innate 'again, again' approach favoured by children. By the end of the show they can raucously join in with their favourite bits. "A fine piece of children's theatre," says The Sunday Times; "Monstrous fun," says The Daily Mail.

Royal Opera: Dialogues Des Carmelites

Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9DD

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Leicester Square Station

Director Robert Carsen, who staged 'Falstaff' at the Royal Opera House in 2012, brings his award-winning production of Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites to Covent Garden this summer. The starkly beautiful staging of the opera set during the violent upheaval of the French Revolution combines modern design with period costumes and uses stunning lighting effects. There are contrasting scenes as hundreds of revolutionaries swarm the stage, followed by a scene of silent contemplation as Blanche, the timid daughter of an aristocrat, joins the Carmelite order of nuns, against the wishes of her family. The action culminates in one of opera's most devastating final scenes, as Blanche embraces death with her fellow nuns, to the hymn Salve Regina.

Having made the cut for the BBC's Sound of 2014 list, which includes HAIM, Adele, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J among its previous winners, and been named the Critics' Choice Award for the Brits 2014, Smith is certainly one to watch. For his debut single Money on My Mind, Smith took inspiration from Major Lazer's Pon De Floor to create an undoubtedly catchy chorus. Now with this new play she explores the cost of integrity. Directed by Maria Aberg who last year directed As You Like It redrawn as a Glastonbury-style music festival for the Royal Shakespeare Company, following her riotous production of King John in the Swan Theatre as part of the World Shakespeare Festival.
