The most exciting new hotel to launch in 2011 was undoubtedly the reopening of what used to be the Midland Grand Hotel while US import W Hotel arrived in Leicester Square and the Corinthia caused a stir in the luxury end of the market.

W London-Leicester Square Hotel

February 2011

10 Wardour Street, Soho, London, W1D 6QF

Tube: Piccadilly Circus Station , Leicester Square Station

On the site of what used to be the landmark Swiss Centre in Leicester Square the W London - Leicester Square Hotel now occupies this dominant corner site. Architects Jestico + Whiles have given the building a "playful frosted facade" - ie making use of lots of glass - which allows the building facade to change under coloured lights while also making maximum use of natural daylight in the bedrooms. The mixed-use building includes a ten-floor 192-room hotel, opened in February 2011, as well as a spa and ten penthouse apartments, two storeys of retail space and a casino and restaurants on two basement levels. Well known worldwide, the W hotel brand is a stylish, modern concept and their first London hotel includes signature W trademarks like the W Living Room concept, where guests are invited to "mix, mingle and relax in a stylish social atmosphere". Service is at the heart of their philosophy, exemplified by their Whatever/Whenever service, a 24-hour concierge that grants your every wish - from box seats at a Premier League game to a private shopping excursion at Harrods. "Whatever you want. Whenever you want it (as long as it's legal!)" goes the motto.

St John Hotel

31 March 2011

1 Leicester Street, Soho, London, WC2H 7BL

Tube: Leicester Square Station , Piccadilly Circus Station

The St John Hotel is a project from the owners of the critically acclaimed St John restaurant in Clerkenwell. Situated right in the heart of the West End, just off Leicester Square, St John is an ambitious offering from owners Trevor Gulliver and Fergus Henderson, on the site of what used to be the famous seafood restaurant Manzi's. Featuring simple yet carefully designed rooms, the hotel promotes itself as having 'rooms that have everything the traveller needs and nothing that they do not'. Minimalist is a word that could be used to suitably describe the design of the hotel with the smallest guest rooms self-described as simply 'removing the need for a taxi home after supper'. When it comes to the supper itself, the St John doesn't disappoint, with separate menus for breakfast, elevenses, lunch and dinner and the unusually titled 'Little Bun Moment'.

Corinthia Hotel London

2 April 2011

Whitehall Place, Westminster, London, SW1A 2BD

Tube: Embankment Underground Station , Charing Cross Station

The historic Metropole building is to be returned to its original use as a hotel when it becomes the Corinthia Hotel London, with the grand unveiling due to occur in spring 2011. The building first opened in 1885 as the Hotel Metropole - a grand venue popular for banquets, balls and dinner parties - but, like much of Northumberland Avenue, it was requisitioned during the First World War and has been used by the Ministry of Defence since the Second World War - and at one point it housed the HQ of UFO sightings. Now it returns to its original grandeur and purpose, transforming it into a £300 million luxury hotel with 300 bedrooms (that's £1 million per room) with multi-level penthouse suites and terraces from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the River Thames, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall. Arranged around an elegant central courtyard foyer, facilities include a choice of restaurants, luxury spa, Massimo Restaurant & Oyster Bar, meeting rooms and the refurbished grand ballroom - used for state balls in the 1880s. The adjoining property at 10 Whitehall Place is also being redeveloped and will include a large, four storey ESPA spa as well as a suite of 12 exclusive residences.

The Zetter Townhouse

18 April 2011

49-50 St John's Square, Clerkenwell, London, EC1V4JJ

Tube: Farringdon Station , Barbican Station

The Zetter Townhouse is a few steps from the original much larger and more modern Zetter Hotel. A quirky refurb of two Georgian townhouses with just 13 bedrooms, a few private event rooms and the Cocktail Lounge which is a collaboration with the mixologists behind 69 Colebrooke Row, an Islington cocktail bar widely regarded as one of the best in London. With cocktails by Tony Conigliaro and Camille Hobby Limon and interiors by Russell Sage, the Cocktail Lounge is worthy as a destination in itself and also serves light meals, nibbles, and afternoon tea, all within a lovely bohemian hideaway. If you prefer something more substantial, the Bistrot Bruno Loubet is located in the Zetter Hotel along with a dozen other excellent places to eat within a few minutes walk. Where the Zetter Hotel has set the standard, its sister Townhouse hotel sticks faithfully to the winning combination of luxury - think big fluffy bathrobes, 200 thread count sheets and free Wi-Fi - quality furniture and quirky decor, making this one of London's best boutique hotels.

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel

5 May 2011

Euston Road, Bloomsbury, London, NW1 2QP

Tube: King's Cross Station

Despite Sir John Betjeman's prediction that this imposing Gothic building would be "too beautiful and too romantic to survive" in the modern world, he would have certainly admired the marathon restoration project which saw the building open its revolving doors to the public again in 2011. Having lain dormant for some time, the renovated property, christened as the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, still occupies parts of the original Midland Grand Hotel, which dates back to 1873. Nowadays, the hotel features 38 stunning suites whilst the upper levels of the building have now been developed into apartments by the Manhattan Loft Corporation. Although it was the architecture of the building which charmed Betjeman, the interior is an equally stunning tribute to intricate craftsmanship. The attention is very much in the detail at this hotel, with gold leaf ceilings, hand-stencilled designs decorating the walls and a grand carpeted staircase. If you simply want to spend a few hours at the hotel soaking up the splendour, The Gilbert Scott restaurant, headed by Marcus Wareing, provides one of London's finest dining experiences. There is also The Booking Office Bar, perfect for business breakfast or classic English dining, with an impressive cocktail list as well as the hotel's luxury spa which is open to non-residents.

The Montcalm London City at The Brewery

23 May 2011

52 Chiswell Street, Sundial Court, City, London, EC1Y4SD

Tube: Moorgate Station , Barbican Station

Located right in the heart of London's financial district, The Montcalm at The Brewery offers five-star accommodation and relaxation to business-minded guests. Formerly the site of the Whitbread & Co brewery, this Grade II listed building has lavishly decorated guestrooms, state-of-the-art modern technologies and an overall atmosphere of class and flamboyance. Part of the Montcalm hotel group, this hotel is close to Liverpool Street Station, Moorgate and the Barbican with St Paul's and the buzzing markets of Spitalfields and Brick Lane within easy walking distance. Situated in the City, it's also conveniently close to the financial district for those staying in town on business. The hotel offers modern en-suite guestrooms and opulent luxury suites, all kitted out with relaxing rain showers, iPod docking stations and high speed wireless internet access. Dine out at the hotel's own Chiswell Street Dining Rooms or enjoy a pint in the Jugged Hare pub - with its rich brewery heritage it's only fitting that there's top quality beer on offer here.

Eccleston Square Hotel

4 July 2011

37 Eccleston Square, Victoria, London, SW1V 1PB

Tube: Victoria Station

The grade II listed, 40 room Eccleston Square Hotel is the result of a £6.5m refurbishment which transformed the interior with high tech features and a modern design. On the borders of Belgravia and Victoria, Eccleston Square Hotel is slap bang in the middle of Pimlico and aims to reinvent the 'city' hotel room with incredibly high tech interiors such as 46 inch 3D LED TVs, iPod docks, HD TV channels and super fast WiFi access. The 'world's best beds' from Swedish company Hastens are in each room of the hotel, costing £12k each, and offer electronic adjustment and massage feature. The marble bathrooms have a mirror with 'hidden' TV, high-pressure massage showers and a rainfall shower head. And, in perhaps the coolest of all the high tech gadgets, the 'smart glass' between the bathrooms and bedrooms turns opaque at the touch of a button. Every room has a control pad for the room features - lighting, curtains, TV and sound track. You can control wake up and bedtime settings for all these functions. The hotel will also have a 49 cover Bar and Restaurant with modern European menus created by Kieran Moore.

45 Park Lane

1 September 2011

Park Lane, Hyde Park, London, W1K 1PN

Tube: Hyde Park Corner Station

Just down the road from sister hotel The Dorchester, 45 Park Lane is the new kid on the (very exclusive Mayfair) block. Opened on 1 September 2011, the small hotel - with just 45 rooms and suites - has been designed for comfort and luxury by internationally acclaimed architect and designer Thierry W. Despont who has used art deco as a leit motif. Just across the road from Hyde Park, the views are leafy and green and only get better the higher - and more costly - you go. The panoramic views from the wraparound terrace of the Penthouse Suite are nothing short of spectacular. Most exciting, especially among meat lovers, is Wolfgang Puck's steak restaurant, CUT at 45 Park Lane, where you can dine on the best steak money can buy while surrounded by Damien Hirst's 'Psalms'. Art is a feature of the hotel with original works by leading, living British artists in every bedroom. Each room also includes an iPad, and a yoga mat with yoga instruction accessible via your flat screen television. Guests can also use the Fitness Studio on the first floor, open 24 hours a day, or take up the offer of complimentary access to The Dorchester's more extensive spa. Additional public areas include Bar 45, a residents' Library and a private MediaRoom where you can watch private screenings from the comfort of a well padded armchair.

Premier Inn Stratford

21 September 2011

Westfield Stratford, Stratford, London, E15 1AZ

Tube: Stratford Station

Budget hotel chain Premier Inn is planning to open 12 new hotels in London between 2010 and 2013 including locations at Old Street, Heathrow and Waterloo, a 95-bedroom hotel in Islington, and this 267-bed hotel at Westfield's Stratford City development at the London 2012 Olympic Park. The Premier Inn Stratford will be one of two hotels within the vast retail and leisure centre - together, Stratford City and the Olympic Park form a massive 700-acre development. Located above the main retail centre, the £25 million hotel, due to open in 2011, will be the closest hotel to the new Stratford International station which will link the Olympic Park to St Pancras International in central London. Striving for the title of 'London's leading budget hotel operator', this latest launch brings the total number of Premier Inn hotels in the city to 59 by 2012.

Z Soho

October 2011

17 Moor Street, Soho, London, W1D 5AP

Tube: Leicester Square Station , Tottenham Court Road Station, Covent Garden Station

Z Soho (nothing to do with The Zetter, in case you were wondering) is aimed squarely at those who want cheap but stylish accommodation, slap bang in the city centre. Erm, yes please. The price you pay (singles start at an affordable £85, doubles £110) gets you a compact and bijou room to call your own. Don't expect space - look at that price, it doesn't buy you space - but you do get a certain amount of style including an en suite wet room and good gadgetry like a 40-inch Samsung Smart TV which allows you to surf the web and play your iPhone or iPad on your TV. And, get this, there's free Wi-Fi too. Founded by Bev King, former COO of Thistle Hotels, the hotel is a mix of old and new - "classic architectural proportions, combined with contemporary style" as they say - and is made up of 12 connected townhouses, including some listed buildings, located in a triangle between Charing Cross Road, Old Compton Street and Moor Street. Inside the 85 rooms are set around a central courtyard and they've got their own cafe at the back, accessed from Old Compton Street, serving drinks, light bites and all day breakfast. Just don't get too comfortable - the diminutive room size will soon see you exploring the city, rather than enjoying a duvet day.
