The Great Northern Hotel

April 2013

Cheney Road, King's Cross, London, N1C 4TB

Tube: King's Cross Station

Originally designed by Lewis Cubitt and opened on 17th May 1854, The Great Northern Hotel in King's Cross, one of the first examples of the great railway hotels, is the oldest purpose built hotel in London - original features which have been restored for its 2013 reopening include the facade, windows, lead-lined gutters, cast iron grilles and drainpipes. Emerging from a 12-year closure - to make way for the Channel Tunnel rail link and improvements to Kings Cross and St Pancras Station - the 19th century Grade II listed hotel has undergone a makeover by Dexter Moren Associates and emerged as a 91 luxury bedroom hotel with a bar and restaurant. Plum Spilt Milk is the 90-cover first floor restaurant and bar offering all day dining and a brasserie style menu, while the Great Northern Bar on the ground floor gives guests access from the hotel to the new £550 million King's Cross Station, leading to St Pancras International from where the Eurostar links London to Paris, Lille and Brussels.

One Leicester Street

1st May 2013

1 Leicester Street, Soho, London, WC2H 7BL

Tube: Leicester Square Station , Piccadilly Circus Station

From 1st May 2013 the 15-room St John Hotel is renamed One Leicester Street with chef patron, Tom Harris, still very much on board. The main change is the backing of Singaporean hotelier Peng Loh who has come on board, adding the hotel to the Unlisted Collection group - which also owns the Town Hall Hotel. Some minor refurbishment by Universal Design Studio has been applied to the interiors, with the public areas and rooms getting a soft refurb while the restaurant and bar get a more substantial makeover. Black ash timber dining chairs, sharp white tablecloths and copper pendant lights create a modern environment in the dining room. An awning covered terrace extends the restaurant outdoors so even if you haven't made a reservation you can stop for coffee or a light bite. But, most importantly, the Michelin starred restaurant, famous for its nose-to-tail food philosophy first pioneered by St John's original owners Trevor Gulliver and Fergus Henderson, remains firmly in place.

The Nadler Soho

1st June 2013

10 Carlisle Street, Soho, London, W1D 3BR

Tube: Tottenham Court Road Station

The flagship hotel of the rebranded base2stay hotel group, The Nadler Soho takes over two 17th century houses and stitches them together with some newly built spaces to create a 78-room hotel behind a facade of Portland stone. Embracing the neighbourhood's edgy reputation, the smallest rooms are labelled the 'Got Lucky Rooms', just in case you do, you know, get lucky. If you want to stay in style choose one of the suites - The Nadler Deluxe Suite has a four-poster bed, a mini kitchen, and enough space to sleep four people while The Carlisle Suite promises "an exceptional experience" with sitting room, dining facilities and stunning views of Soho Square. All rooms come with mini kitchens and free WiFi, free digital papers and magazines, 32 inch LED TV, web radio and 8,000 track music library. Given its central Soho location it's surprisingly quiet - thanks to having no bar or restaurant (plenty of those on your doorstep) and proper soundproofing.

Ace Hotel London Shoreditch

11th September 2013

100 Shoreditch High Street, Shoreditch, London, E1 6JQ

Tube: Old Street Station

Hip US hotel group Ace hotels, a chain co-founded by Alex Calderwood and which began in Seattle, expanded to Portland, then opened in Palm Springs, and Manhattan, New York, comes to Shoreditch in September 2013, expanding from their US sites to add a London outpost. Their mission is to bring a "locally-inspired approach to design and development", giving "new life to challenged properties in emerging locations". In London that means 100 Shoreditch High Street, formerly a 10-year-old Crowne Plaza, becomes a trendy hotel with facade and interiors updated by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby of Universal Design Studio, and Hoi Polloi restaurant and bar run by the people behind Bistrotheque and Shrimpy's with Square Mile Coffee Roasters on site. "The people who throng the Ace are fashionable, but not overly so; no one appears eager to turn heads with a striking outfit or outrageous hairstyle" says The New York Times of the Ace Hotel in an overlooked neighbourhood of Manhattan. Seems Ace and Shoreditch are a match made in hotel heaven.

The London EDITION

12th September 2013

10 Berners Street, Fitzrovia, London, W1T 3NP

Tube: Tottenham Court Road Station , Goodge Street Station, Oxford Circus Station

The former Berners Hotel in Fitzrovia, closed since 2006, was bought by Marriott International in November 2010 and will become the London Edition when it opens in 2013. The historic grade ll listed Berners Street building has had a £33 million makeover to become a luxury lifestyle hotel under the Edition brand, created by Marriott in partnership with legendary American hotelier Ian Schrager complete with a restaurant, Berner's Tavern, run by Jason Atherton. The building, which was originally built in 1835 as five separate houses, has had its facade restored to its former glory and the interior extensively refurbished to create a stylish 175-bedroom hotel. David Taylor, general manager of the Hoxton Hotel since its launch five-and-a-half years ago, has been appointed general manager. The Edition brand aims to be the 'antithesis of a chain', characterised by personalised and unique design spaces and modern service. For an idea of what we can expect from the London Edition, look at its already opened Istanbul sister which has a restaurant by Cipriani, a spa by ESPA with indoor swimming pool, a private screening room and nightclub. These hotels are the first of several new Editions with ten more planned in cities worldwide including Miami and New York, Beijing, Bangkok and Abu Dhabi.
