NEW YEAR IN LONDON 2006
3. New Year Bar Nights

Not everyone loves going clubbing - so here's a bunch of more low-key (but equally wild) parties kicking off on New Year's Eve in smaller venues around the city. Live music and DJs, costumes and dressing down, style bars and pubs, underground clubs and full-on cheese fests - there's so much variety, and all at a fraction of the cost of a big club night.

Kentish Town Forum, 9-17 Highgate Road, Kentish Town, NW5 1NX

31st December 2006

Live, loud, fun - three words just about sum up a Saturday night at Frog. Now one of the best live music nights in the capital is sorting it out for a New Year's Eve special at the Forum.

As well as the Frog residents belting out the latest 45s to an appreciative young crowd there will be live sets from London's own Larrikin Love, short-suited post-punkers The Young Knives and brilliant Devonshire four-piece The Rumble Strips.

The fabulous Forum will afford plenty of space for lager-swilling and sweat-spraying dancing. The quality of the tunes on their Saturday nights at Meanfiddler is spot on - in a bigger venue for the biggest party of the year they should attract a fair number of the Camden hordes up the road to Kentish Town.

See in the New Year at the brand new Big Chill venue in King's Cross with DJ sets from Idjut Boys, electro-funk forerunner Greg Wilson, Fat Camp and a typically DIY set from Michael Cook. We reckon this spanking new style bar needs a riotous party to roughen up the edges and give it some of that organic Big Chill atmosphere.

The Lock Tavern, The Enterprise and Barfly, Camden Town, NW1 8AN

31st December 2006

Barfly - one of the best places to catch live music in Camden - teams up with two of the area's coolest pubs, the Lock Tavern and the Enterprise, for a three venue party to usher in the New Year.

Punters are urged to dress in full Alice in Wonderland fancy dress for the Mad Hatter's Tea Party but they'll accept a particularly mad hat. Amongst all this fancy dress they'll be DJ sets from Dolly Rockers, Filthy Dukes, The Rakes and True Grit, not to mention a programme of live sets from some secret guests.

Spread over three venues, this night of cracking tunes and live music will provide plenty of variety for those who feel more at home seeing in the New Year in a pub rather than a club.

Cargo, 83 Rivington Street, EC2A 3AY

31st December 2006

The sprawling West London broken beat collective will be whipping up a party vibe to usher in the New Year.

After a decade of DJing and remixing, the Bugz released their debut album to respectful underground acclaim. Less experimental than some of their off-the-wall remixes, 'Back in the Doghouse' peddled an infectious dance-floor vibe. Splurging funky bass lines, bounced off broken hip hop beats, overlaid with sweet vocal licks.

The many members might be a touch cramped on the diminutive Cargo stage, amongst their batteries of percussion and synths, but the crowd will be right there with them too. Bugz love a party atmosphere and the parade of guest vocalists will be inciting the crowd into delirious frenzy.
As well as the live set the Co-Op residents will be mixing their way into 2007 with the coolest sounds of future soul. Plus, of all the bar-come-clubs in Shoreditch, Cargo consistently produces the best nights of music.

Ginglik, Shepherd's Bush Green, W12 8PH

31st December 2006

Word-of-mouth has made Ginglik one of the most popular nightspots in West London. They've managed to create a fantastic local vibe, supporting young artists and musicians; you'll feel like old friends at the end of your first night there.

For their fourth New Year's bash, Ginglik have come up with a really intriguing line-up, blending live music and turntablists. Masdafarai Sound System's funk-dub-breaks odyssey fits in a string of vocalists, horns, drums, bass, beat boxing and a whole lot more. Nathan Lee has to be seen to be believed - the Prodigy collaborator beat boxes and plays the flute simultaneously. On the decks there'll be hip hop and breaks from DJ Shorty, electro and dub from Edzy and slick Ninja Tune meanderings from Saffrola Sounds.

Chilled out but still funky, for a compromise between clubbing and live music you won't get much better than this cool hideaway beneath the streets.

The Tabernacle, 55-61 Tabernacle Street, EC2A 4LE

31st December 2006

Hat-Club rules. These goodtime kids have gone from throwing smallish parties for a crowd of mates to selling out the colossal Canvas in 2005. They've been a bit quieter this year but this Hogmanay bash at the Tabernacle should be a brilliant, intimate party.

Behind the decks Filthy Rich, Kevin Griffiths, James Fitch, Henry Burrows, Nick Piper and Just Justin will be laying down the most energetic, upfront house in the city.

This is a great venue and a really happening event organised by some party people who simply want to spread their love of hats and house and have found an army of followers. This will be a special one - but DON'T forget your hat or you WON'T get in.

Jamm, 261 Brixton Road, SW9 6LH

31st December 2006

Cheap as chips and nearly as tasty, Throb is a night with excessive character. This year they're promising to take the overpriced, overhyped and underwhelming out of New Year's Eve. How? Ten quid in, pub prices all night and some wicked, varied, pumping house music.

This year's night goes under the title 'Strictly Come Throbbing' - so early on they'll be dance instructors amongst the crowd teaching some new shapes and later prizes for the best moves, plus a cheesy compere organising dance offs. Guests are encouraged to dress up in a stupid dance outfit...so dust off your tutu.

This will be a fun packed night. Throb parties have a reputation for not quitting till the bitter end, so expect to finish the party somewhere else, well inside 2007.

Infernos, 146 Clapham High Street, SW4 7UH

31st December 2006

Flying the flag for those who wish their uni days had never ended - Infernos is putting on another New Year's party which any student union in the country would be proud off. The only thing that'll be missing is cheap beer.

Thousands of incorrigible drunks will spend New Year's by eyeing each other up, dancing to cheese and spilling cocktails all over the place. Infernos is an apt name for this place, which can resemble the third circle of hell to the uninitiated - but we love it. Set over four mammoth floors, this is the ultimate boozy night out, complete with crowd-pleasing music, cool costumes, and plenty of lads and lasses on the pull.

This year's party is called Wigstock - so there won't be quite as many skimpy outfits as at last year's beach party - but there will be some huge comedy afros. If you want to spend this New Year's Eve getting truly tanked up, mingling with the opposite sex and dancing to some serious cheese, then Infernos is the place to go. Party on!

Date: 31st December 2006

Jazz Cafe, 5 Parkway, NW1 7PG

26th December 2006 - 1st January 2007

Funky soul man Roy Ayers has sold out more nights in London than any other artist. We are his home away from home, and British audiences have loved every note the guy has produced, from party floor-filler 'My Life in the Sunshine' to his latest release with Ubiquity, 'Juice'. Roy is a marvellous, timeless musician and this set at the Jazz Cafe will send a small, privileged crowd into 2007 on a happy, soulful high.

This gig is a brilliant bet for revellers who love their soul music and want to shake a leg but can't cope with thousands of drunken animals around them. The refined setting of the venue, which also has dinner tables available for early arrivals, puts both musicians and crowd in the mood to reflect on the sheer joy of music. Ayers will rise to this occasion and lift the crowd with him.

Hammersmith Palais, 230 Shepherd's Bush Road, W6 7NL

31st December 2006

Attention pupils! The headmaster summons you to the Hammersmith Palais to get royally drunk with thousands of like minded naughty pupils. School Disco is an embarrassing, cheesy nostalgia-fest, made even more shameful by the sexy schoolgirls on display and the strutting men in shorts. We're only admitting to visiting this place once - but we have to say - we loved it!

If you can muster a posse of like-minded party animals, why not ring in the New Year at this massive disco party? The dress code may be demeaning but the music is spot on - classic tunes every one, and perfect for drunken dancing. The special time of year means you're also that little more likely to pull - making it a virtual certainty!

So bad it's good, with lashings of booze and brilliant tunes cementing this as an unforgettable, albeit embarrassing way to roll into 2007.
