NEW YEAR IN LONDON 2006
2. New Year Club Nights

With the best clubs in Europe, probably the world, London is THE place to dance your way into 2007. The finest DJs, amazingly decorated venues, beautifully dressed clubbers - this really will be a night to remember. Ranging from dirty breaks at Chew The Fat! to the glamorous champagne and house party at Pacha - there will be something to suit your taste. As the clock strikes twelve, remember - the party is only just beginning.

The Key, King's Cross Freight Yard, N1 9AA

31st December 2006

Thank the lord! The Key have given over the club to Platform 12, possibly the most consistently buzzy night of 2006, to celebrate our arrival at the dawn of another 52 weekends of wild clubbing. With plenty enough house and techno nights around it's a relief to see a beefy breaks line-up. Starting out as a residents-only affair this night has now got the crowds and the kudos to attract a big New Year's line-up.

Taking the headline slot are the Stanton Warriors. The Key is a big, plush venue, blessed with a crisp sound system and it will be good to see the Stanton Warriors playing a more intimate space than Fabric, where they regularly lord it over the huddled cattle in the breaks room. Elsewhere we can expect a party-rocking scratch 'n' cut, hip hop warm-up from Krafty Kuts. Beat freaks shouldn't miss upcoming talent Metric, predicted to become a top producer. Sets from Platform 12 residents Clive Morely, Ladykilla and Janette Slack will complete a night of funky beats, dirty bass and wildly bleeping synths.

Plus it's an absolute bargain - a £25 ticket includes entrance to the after-party at The Old Queen's Head on the Essex Road and (if the New Year's resolutions have sufficiently lapsed) entrance to the next Platform 12 on January 20).

Fabric, 77a Charterhouse Street, EC1M 3HN

31st December 2006

Fabric can get pretty packed at the best of times, and is sure to be absolutely rammed in for this party, which combines the urban edge of Fabriclive Fridays with the storming Saturday house music residency.

Worshiped residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis will be holding court in Room One, mixing a distinct blend of the finest house and tech, backed up by Tobi Neumann and Jamie Jones and live performances from Booka Shade and Fuckpony. They'll be a breaks-electro-techno mash up in Room Two with sets from Justice, Erol Alkan, Joakim and resident Meat Katie mixing across multiple decks, scratching and, above all, fat beats. Meanwhile in Room Three Ame, Dixon, Marcus Worgull and Rob Summerhayes will be venturing to the very edges of leftfield.

A stellar line-up at London's biggest, most famous club and a festive atmosphere to match. This will be a cracker.

Turnmills, 63b Clerkenwell Road, EC1M 5NP

31st December 2006

It might have transformed from a year's end rave up into a monthly party in 2006, but the boys and girls behind Together are sure to put on a block-rocking bash for Hogmanay.

This is the fifth anniversary of this wild celebration and for the fourth consecutive year the Chemical Brothers take the headline slot. Not as high profile as they once were, the Chemicals built their reputation rocking parties hard in the early 90s, and they haven't forgotten how. Also belting out the tunes in the main room are acid house maestro Justin Robertson and Brighton's Caged Baby (Southern Fried).

German tech-electro experimentalist Silversurfer and Parisian house guru :TERRY: have been drafted into add a dash of cosmopolitan flair to Mulletover in room two. They'll be joined by local boy Geddes and Carbon Record's Mike Oman.

Together nights are famed throughout clubland for their unique atmosphere and exceptional music. Just like their monthly nights, there's an optional 'rock idol' fancy dress theme. Expect a troupe of Elvis impersonators and God knows what else. Grotty old Turnmills will be overflowing with happy, beautiful ravers, transported into the New Year on a flood of mind-bending music. This is a real no-holds-barred party.

Egg, 200 York Way, N7 9AP

31st December 2006

Renaissance Italy's favourite pastime, the masquerade ball, should fit in well at Egg, home to the best dressed, most fun loving crowd in the capital. Hundreds of nattily disguised club kids will descend upon Egg to see in the New Year. It's a great way to weave in a bit of the fun of fancy dress without compromising style or spending all night in an uncomfortable costume (that was only funny for five minutes anyway).

Through the hall of mirrors and into the club proper - the basement will be taken over by a triple-pronged German minimalist blitzkrieg from Dub Taylor (aka Alex Kruger), Matthias Tanzmann and Miss Kitz. Expect a rolling set of beats ranging from the most absurdly pared down, through murky dub, to bleeping twitchy synth laden floor fillers.

The undercover terrace will be hosted by Trailer Trash who've been earning themselves quite a name at On the Rocks in Shoreditch with their angry brand of dirty dirty electro. The night is topped off with a burlesque boudoir in the loft with a live performance from the Adora Girls.

A magical journey into 2007 - for the energetic and truly decadent, there's an after party from 6am so you can carry on well into the New Year. Now for those resolutions...

Carling Academy Brixton, 211 Stockwell Road, SW9 9SL

31st December 2006

Heat is the biggest hard dance event kicking off (legally) in the capital this New Year's Eve. Whistles, horns, glo-sticks and water at the ready, as over 4000 sweaty ravers large it up into 2007 to a soundtrack of ear-bleeding, mind warping house, trance, electro and breaks.

There's about 30 DJs billed to play but suffice it to say that with the likes of Above and Beyond, Tall Paul, Rob Tissera and Gavyn Mitchell on the decks, you can expect body-moving dance all night in all four arenas of this massive venue. Heat has been running for a whole five years now and draws a young, wild crowd. Expect lunatic dancing, random conversations and a lot of hands in the air. An added bonus this year is the recruitment of Party Proactive to host the foyer.

Not one for the casual clubber - this is the place where the most mad-for-it kids will gather to ring in the New Year with a truly outlandish celebration. For once you'll know when the clock strikes twelve too as Heat are coordinating a huge pyrotechnic countdown.

Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, SE1 6DP

31st December 2006 - 31st December 2006

The biggest brand in clubbing? Probably. Ministry take time out from their operations round the world to put on a banging London New Year's Eve party.

Just like the punters, their base in Elephant and Castle will be dressed to kill in the spirit of East meets West. Drift amongst coloured lanterns, golden Buddha statues and geisha girls in the bar, now an oriental Zen garden. Whilst in the main room, they'll be taking it back to the old skool, to early 80s New York. Ministry know how to put on a big show - the night will be peppered with acrobats, trapeze artists, burlesque dancers, drag queens, pole dancers and plenty of party time nudity!

Oh yeah, and the music... In the main room they'll be sets of the most brilliantly danceable house from X-Press 2, nu-skool master Dan Ghenacia and Ibiza legend Smokin Jo. In the bar D'Julz, Kenny Hawkes and Marc Hughes will be providing the beats.

Remember this is still just about the only club in London where you still see people wearing matching furry boots and boob tubes - so expect a fun-loving crowd who just don't care. With the cash and the clout to put on a storming, memorable carnival of a party - let's hope Ministry does us proud.

Sub Club, 2 Goulston Street, Aldgate, E1 7TP

31st December 2006

From their modest beginnings in the now defunct Bug Bar in the crypt of St Matthew's in Brixton, Chew the Fat! have become a truly global breakbeat collective. For New Year's Eve they're heading out east to the Sub Club to bounce their way into 2007.

Leading us up to midnight at beyond will be Radio 1 man Tayo, Paul Trouble Arnold, Baobinga and ID, Merka, Unique 3 and Disposable DJs in room one. Meanwhile Mayo Clinic, responsible for some block-rocking nights at the Living Room in Brixton, will be taking charge of the second room.

Unlike other nights in London that constantly aim to upgrade to bigger venues, Chew the Fat have kept it on the down-low. They've exported their underground breakbeat sound around the world but they're still putting on some of the best parties in London. 'Hip hop beats fused with funked up bass rolling at an accessible house tempo' - yes please!

Pacha, Terminus Place, SW1V 1JR

31st December 2006

Short of chartering a Lear jet and celebrating in Tokyo and New York as well, Glitterati offers the most upmarket clubbing experience in the capital. Punters will be treated to the usual cheerful Pacha brew of disco-tinged house, but for a mere £125, party-goers can book themselves in for the full VIP treatment: champagne reception, a secretive after party, full English breakfast (hmmm) and luxury accommodation.

Hotel or no hotel, this is a glam party which draws a slightly older clubbing crowd, dressed up to the nines and ready to get down.

Pacha is a great venue and offers a slice of Ibiza glitz in the mid-winter, and for sophisticated clubbers prepared to spend a little extra, this is an enticing package. Now in its third year, Glitterati is hugely popular so early booking is advised.

Canvas, King's Cross Freight Yard, N1 0UZ

31st December 2006

Renaissance at The Cross is always a wild night and for their New Year's celebrations at Canvas they've lined up the collective talents of Dave Seaman, James Zabiela, Rob Da Bank, Simian Mobile Disco and Groove Armada, not to mention the Sancho Panza sound system takeover of one room. A wild party with a strict diet of house; this has the potential to be one of those intoxicating, exhilarating nights that clubbing all too often fails to deliver. Hopefully you'll leave tired and grinning as the lights are turned up in 2007.

The Cross, Arches 27-31 York Way, N1 0DB

31st December 2006

The three arches of The Cross will be rammed to the rafters with a glamorous crowd of hardened clubbers for this special Hogmanay edition of the hugely successful Type.

Master of ceremonies, Seb Fontaine will be laying done the slickest house beats around. We're still of the opinion that Sister Bliss is best deployed whacking out those hands-in-the-air keyboard riffs for Faithless but she uses her rock-the-crowd know-how to good effect from behind the decks. Also moonlighting as DJs are Bloc Party who have been a surprise hit in clubs up and down the country. Definitely worth a look is Desyn Masiello whose eccentric mix of acid house, funk, soul, reggae, deep, dub, tech and progressive will keep you going into the early hours.

With a legendary resident in Seb Fontaine and the pulling power to bring in some top DJs, this special New Year's Type party will be a brilliant, uplifting journey into 2007.
