Bonfire Night

Fireworks displays light up London to remember, remember the 5th of November.

November is the month that likes to go with a bang - and an explosive one at that. The 5th November marks Guy Fawkes' failed plot to blow up Parliament with the kind of pyrotechnics Mr Fawkes could only dream of. This year Bonfire Night events are being held on 5th November itself at Brockwell Park, Crystal Palace Park and, making its debut this year, at East Village in Victory Park within the former Olympic Athletes' Village. Further large scale fireworks displays are on Saturday 1st November in Alexandra Palace Park, on Blackheath and in Morden, and in Richmond on Sunday 2nd November. The fireworks continue the following weekend on Friday 7th November at Bishops Park, and on Saturday 8th November at Battersea Park to the south and  Ravenscourt Park in west London which both coincide with the Lord Mayor's Show fireworks finale. To read about all the fireworks displays around London on Bonfire Night weekend then read this year's Fireworks in London article.

London to Brighton Veteran Car Run

500 or so fine pre-1905 cars drive from Hyde Park in central London to Brighton.

Hyde Park, Rangers Lodge, Hyde Park, London, W2 2UH

Tube: Knightsbridge Station

Dates: 02nd November 2014

Over 500 pre-1905 vehicles are expected for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run which allows vintage car enthusiasts from all over the UK and beyond to enjoy a picturesque drive down to the south coast, through some of Britain's loveliest scenery. It's also a bit of a spectacle. These 500 or so fine examples of pre-1905 cars make the 60 mile drive from Hyde Park in central London to the Brighton seafront in Sussex. The day before the run, on Saturday 1st November, more than 100 of these beautiful old cars parade up and down Regent Street as part of The Regent Street Motor Show. You can get up and close to view them and its absolutely free of charge. This annual event has taken place every November to commemorate the Emancipation Run of 1896, celebrating the passing into law of the 'Locomotives on the Highway Act'. This raised the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and meant that cars no longer had to travel with a man walking in front. The tradition continues to today with cars leaving from Serpentine Road, exiting Hyde Park at Apsley Gate from 6.58am. It's a great event for anyone who's into motoring and kids love these wonderful old classic cars too.

The procession starts at 11am with an RAF flypast and goes on until about 2.30pm, covering the whole area between Bank and Aldwych with the mayor departing from Mansion House for the Royal Courts of Justice where she takes an oath of allegiance to the Queen. Towards the head of the procession are two wicker giants, Gog and Magog, the traditional guardians of the City of London. It's a fun family day out with a grand finale - the day finishes with one of London's most impressive fireworks displays at 5pm, set off from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo Bridges. The best vantage points to watch from tend to be around Embankment and Gabriel's Wharf.

The ATP World Tour Finals returns to The O2 Arena for eight days of tennis between the world's best eight men's singles players and men's doubles pairs. Expect some titanic clashes between the likes of Murray, Federer, Novak Djokovic and (injury permitting) Rafa Nadal. Last year, a capacity crowd of 17,800 witnessed defending champion Novak Djokovic defeat World No.1 Rafael Nadal for the title and a record 1.92 million dollars in prize money. Since moving to London in 2009, the popular eight-day tournament has been watched by a remarkable 1.28 million fans at The O2 arena.

Tube: Goldhawk Road Station , Shepherd's Bush Market Station (Hammersmith and City Line), Shepherd's Bush Station (Central)

Dates: 12th November 2014

Five years after La Roux's debut album the Grammy Award-winning London-based outfit fronted by singer Elly Jackson return playing their distinctive eighties-influenced synth-heavy electro-pop at Shepherd's Bush Empire. La Roux fans have had to wait five long years for a follow up to the hugely successful debut album. During that time Jackson split with her songwriting partner Ben Langmaid but that hasn't had any adverse effect on the quality of the music. Named "the year's best pop album so far" by Alexis Petridis in The Guardian on its release in July, 'Trouble in Paradise' still packs "the same melodic punch as her debut," (writes Tim Jonze in The Guardian) but "this record has a warmer, sexier, more groove-led feel". Barring a triumphant comeback appearance at 2013's Coachella festival La Roux hasn't been seen on stage in recent years but now the south London singer is back with a UK and European wide tour including this one-night-only London gig.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Wooden chalets, fairground rides, ice skating, the circus, what more could you want?

Hyde Park, Rangers Lodge, Hyde Park, London, W2 2UH

Tube: Knightsbridge Station

Dates: 21st November - 05th January 2020

Throughout late November and December the section of Hyde Park near Hyde Park Corner is transformed into a Winter Wonderland, complete with fairground rides, giant wheel, circus, Christmas market, food and drink stalls, Santa's grotto and, of course, an ice rink. It's the sixth consecutive year that the Winter Wonderland has come to Hyde Park and it's already a favourite in many Londoners' calendars. New for this year is the Magical Ice Kingdom, a walk-through world of ice and snow with woodland creatures and a unicorn-pulled carriage. Doing your best Torvill and Dean impersonation is a great way to embrace the cold and the Ice Rink - which surrounds the Victorian bandstand and is illuminated by 108,000 pea-lights - is the biggest of its kind in the UK. A turn on the 53-metre-high Observational Wheel offers great views over London's most popular Christmas attraction. Zippos Circus is always a hit and the show never fails to pull crowds into its heated big top when temperatures plummet while the daredevil Zippos Cirque Berserk entertain the evening crowd. The traditional Angels Christmas Market, with its wooden chalets and various Bavarian-style bars and cafes, is a hoot, as is the Spiegel Saloon, a large, festive and fully covered restaurant. Don't go with an empty wallet because while the whole thing is not cheap, it's such fun you'll want to get into the spirit and spend. (Remember: advanced booking on the main attractions is advised while you'll need to buy tokens from kiosks dotted around the fair for the many rides.) Free entry to the site means you can just walk around and absorb the festive ambiance - but it will take a strong will not to succumb to the smells and fun on offer.

Staged as a concert in the main Barbican hall in March 2013, this is the first time the work, designed by John Adams and his librettist/director Peter Sellars, has been staged as a full costumed opera. The Other Mary is, Sellars has said, an attempt to "set the passion story in the eternal present, in the tradition of sacred art". Set design is by George Tsypin, the man responsible for the opening ceremony of 2014 Sochi Olympiad and the sets for 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' on Broadway.

Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9DD

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Leicester Square Station

A "fantastical folly of a show" (Evening Standard), Carlos Acosta's Don Quixote, his first major production for the Royal Ballet, receives its first revival a year after it premiered here at the Royal Opera House despite some mixed reviews - "There have been far better versions of this classic ballet than Carlos Acosta's new one," wrote Louise Levene in The Telegraph. Acosta both choreographs and takes the lead role of Basilio with Marianela Nunez who plays Kitri with "bewitching warmth and down-to-earth humanity" (Evening Standard). That newspaper found the whole production to be, "an enjoyable and exuberant three hours" where "even the lame comedy gets a laugh". Set designer Tim Hatley (Spamalot, Shrek, Ghosts) has only partical success in bringing Barcelona to the stage; "too many windmills for comfort" for the Financial Times reviewer, while Debra Craine in The Times found the sliding houses "just annoying" but was more impressed with the set and the costumes, describing the tavern in Act III as "gorgeous".

The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Henry VI, Shakespeare's enduring historical drama, comes to the Barbican this November. Gregory Doran's production features "a major performance from Antony Sher as Falstaff", writes Michael Billington in The Guardian, reviewing the play when it was shown at the RSC's Stratford home. In Henry IV Part I the king prepares for war when his crown becomes under threat from enemies both foreign and domestic. The production plays in parallel with Henry IV Part II (which begins on 2nd December 2014) when the King, his health deteriorating, is trying to decide whether his son, Hal, is a worthy heir.
