Queen Mother's Funeral
Queen Mother's Funeral
9 April – Queen Mother’s Funeral, Westminster Abbey
The ‘royal ceremonial’ funeral took place on Tuesday 9 April at 11.30am in Westminster Abbey. (State funerals are reserved for Sovereigns). The coffin left Westminster Hall at 11.18am, passing through Parliament Square to arrive at Westminster Abbey. Thousands of people lined the route to pay their last respects.
The service was conducted by the Dean of Westminster and the sermon was delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey. 2,000 people attended the funeral, including politicians, church officials, Royal workers and members of the armed forces.
After the funeral (which ended at 12.35pm) the coffin travelled along the A4 to St George’s Chapel, Windsor for a private Committal Service. The cortege arrived at Windsor at 14.00pm. Huge screens set up in Home Park Windsor allowed the public to see the coffin being taken into St George’s Chapel.
