A word of warning: fantastic food, fabulous décor and fastidious staff, but sky-high prices to match. If you’ve got the means, make the most of it and sample the delights of Michel Roux’s culinary wizardry. The wine list is renowned as the most extensive (and expensive) in the capital, but you can’t put a price on perfection!

American
Fast, furious and fun this is the original outpost of the worldwide chain. They’ve been queuing to get a slice of the action since 1971 at the world’s most successful themed diner. Amidst the rock memorabilia, get your teeth into a ‘pig sandwich’, onion rings or even a Veggie burger. All-American food in all-American portions!

A favourite with pursuers of haute cuisine, The Mirabelle serves beautifully presented food in stylish surroundings. Since Marco Pierre White added his touch in the late 1990s, this place has earned its reputation as one of the most popular restaurants in the capital. The omelette ‘Arnold Bennett’ is a hit. The wine list pricey but extensive.
56 Curzon Street, W1

Japanese
Part owned by Robert de Niro, with an ultra swish New York counterpart, Nobu occupies the minimalist and elegant surrounds of the Metropolitan Hotel. A firm favourite with the music, media and fashion crowd it’s worth trying to get a table. The food, a fusion of Japanese and South American, is innovative and flavoursome. Pricey, but a great experience nonetheless.
