Feast of St George

London's main celebrations take place in Trafalgar Square.

Trafalgar Square, Central, Westminster, London, WC2N 5DS

Tube: Charing Cross Station , Leicester Square Station, Embankment Underground Station, Piccadilly Circus Station

Dates: 18th April 2020

Though St George's Day is always on 23rd April, in 2013 it falls on a Tuesday so the London celebrations in Trafalgar Square are taking place on the Saturday before the saint's day, on 20th April. Flag waving is encouraged at this free event held in recognition of England's dragon-slaying patron saint with live bands playing on the main stage and food stalls surrounding the square. This year's event focuses on British food and will serve a number of free tastings, a banqueting area, live cookery demonstrations and food workshops. William Shakespeare's birthday falls on the same date, and Shakespeare's Globe often hosts its own set of celebratory activities at the theatre to tie in with St George's Day. Workshops and interactive fun and games bring the Bard to life for all-comers, young and old. Sadly, despite tireless campaigning to make St George's day a national bank holiday, celebrations on the actual day itself will have to fit in with working hours.

A suitably decadent celebration of St George's Day.

Fortnum & Mason, 181 Piccadilly, St James's, London, W1A 1ER

Celebrating St George's Day in suitably sumptuous style, Fortnum and Mason will be hosting a St George's Day Feast, an evening of Englishness and a treat for the stomach and the senses. The celebrations will begin with and ode to St George and a baron of beef being drummed in by English pikemen, followed by a decadent meal. Diners will be treated to a menu of traditional dishes with a modern interpretation and plenty of wine, which will be used to toast Shakespeare and St George. Dishes include asparagus, pea & mint soup, rib eye with Yorkshire pudding, mushroom tart, rhubarb & elderflower fool, and spiced hot chocolate.

The Lamb Tavern, 10-12 Leadenhall Market, Gracechurch Street, City, London, EC3V 1LR

Shakespeare's Birthday

A whole weekend of celebrations in the theatre.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, 21 New Globe Walk, Bankside, Bankside, London, SE1 9DT

Tube: Mansion House Station

Dates: 19th April 2015

There is some debate over whether Shakespeare was born on St George's Day or not but it's all the excuse the Globe needs to host a whole weekend of events to celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday. With St George's Day/Shakespeare's Birthday falling on a Tuesday this year, the Globe's celebrations will take place on the prior weekend. Sign up for some Sonnet Walks on Saturday 20th April and you'll be beckoned back into Tudor times and 16th century London. Sonneteers entertain the walkers along the route which starts from either Westminster Abbey or the Shoreditch site of Shakespeare's (only recently uncovered) lost theatre, The Theatre, finishing at the Globe. The Sunday will be a free Open Day inviting people to come in and see the theatre for themselves with a whole range of activities and workshops to get to the heart of Shakespeare's craft and couplets. There will be games, magical mayhem, bubbling cauldrons, card trickery and mind-bending roaming magicians during the day, while the evening will see the launch of the 2013 Season of Plenty with an evening of music and magic.
