St George's Day 2008 - Wednesday April 23rd "The game's afoot. Follow you spirit, and upon this charge. Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George!" For many years, the association of St George with the far right kept celebrations low key. However, in recent years, our patron saint (who was, after all, a Turk) has been rehabilitated, and emerged a new symbol of a united nation. Flags, football, pubs and parties are the stock-in-trade of London's current St George's Day celebrations and there is also now a strong movement to have St George's Day made into a formal national holiday.
