String of Pearls Golden Jubilee Festival
March – December 2002

Throughout much of 2002, the String of Pearls festival will be opening up buildings not normally accessible to the public, staging special concerts & exhibitions and getting children excited about London’s past. The ‘string of pearls’ are the 80 buildings lying along the Thames which together are hosting over 400 events for the Golden Jubilee.

OPEN DAYS AND PLACES TO VISIT

Foreign and Commonwealth Office Open Days
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is responsible for promoting the interests of the UK abroad. Located within a Grade 1 Listed building in Whitehall, designed by George Gilbert Scott, and completed in 1875, it houses the Foreign Office, India Office, Colonial Office and Home Office. Explore this fascinating and stunning building and learn more about the work of British Diplomats.

String of Pearls Golden Jubilee FestivalEltham Palace
Originally a Royal Palace, the site boasts a fabulous 15th-century Great Hall, with the third largest hammerbeam roof in the country, all set within beautiful moated grounds. In the 1930s a couple added a spectacular Art Deco inspired home. Eltham Palace is the epitome of style and sophistication. Learn the secrets of its royal and Art Deco past at these events:

27 & 28 May - Royal Progress, a Costumed Event

Eton College
Eton College is a royal foundation, established by Henry Vl in 1440. Famous people educated at Eton include the poets Gray and Shelley, the novelists Fielding, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, and Anthony Powell, foreign secretaries Carrington and Hurd and 18 prime ministers stretching from Walpole and Gladstone to Macmillan and Douglas-Home. Today Eton is a boarding school for 1280 boys and not normally open to the public:

A Century of Queens' Wedding Dresses 1840-1947
Five royal wedding dresses have gone on display at Kensington Palace for the first time. Norman Hartnell's ivory silk creation for HM Queen Elizabeth II boasts 10,000 American seed pearls. The late Queen Mother wore a simple, but highly fashionable drop waisted dress with a lace veil lent to her by Queen Mary. Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary’s stunning dresses are also on display.

Tiaras, Victoria & Albert Museum
Featuring the greatest collection of tiaras ever assembled, this exhibition
traces the evolution of the tiara from the mid 18th century to the present day. Two hundred scintillating gem-set head ornaments are on display, including the most majestic tiaras from the British and European Royal Families.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

8 & 9 June
Tudor Sailors and Elizabethan Dancing, Old Royal Naval College
On the site of Elizabeth I's birthplace, meet the Tudor sailors from Bonaventure who will be showing their skills of seamanship, and telling tales of world wide discovery. You can also learn to celebrate Elizabethan style with Renaissance Footnotes, who will be demonstrating and teaching period dance.

Queen and Country, Marble Hill House
Join in the celebrations as we travel back in time to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Royals, courtiers, soldiers and subjects pay homage to the great queens of England through the ages. Discover the secrets of Boudicca's fearsome warriors, eavesdrop on the gossip of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting and re-live the street parties of 1952 and 1977. Prize for the best red, white and blue fancy dress outfit.
