![]() The school summer holidays are upon on us and parents with children are spilling on to the streets of London in search of fun and entertainment. Keeping youngsters happy for the long days of those summer weeks can be really difficult. Even the most resourceful of parents and carers need help in tracking down activities to amuse their kids. London is such a vast city and is overflowing with a colourful raft of accessible, wonderfully imaginative events and attractions for children.
Theatre shows, workshops, swimming pools, sightseeing tours and a whole spread of wonderful green spaces to run around in are just some of the gems our capital can offer families with tots and teens. Why not take your very young to meet Thomas the Tank Engine at Wembley Arena? For a few days in August the Arena is set to be transformed into the magical island of Sodor with full-size trains steaming across the floor. Kids' Week is back and is, possibly, the highlight of the summer. Throughout the week children will descend on the West End in their thousands and get the opportunity to see the most popular theatre shows for free. Alternatively, whisk city kids to Hampton Court Palace to sample a slice of the rural life. For three days in August the palace will be hosting an incredibly popular rural fair. With stalls, animal shows, fair rides and heaps of activities it's a wonderful summer escape for families. The summer holidays are also the time for encouraging your kids to embrace their creativity. Many of London's biggest attractions hold wonderfully innovative workshops for children. They can build a sculpture at the Imperial War Museum, tread the boards at the Lyric Hammersmith, put crayon to canvass at the National Portrait Gallery or make jewellery at Somerset House. Not only are these workshops heaps of fun they are also wonderfully educational. Some are even completely free. Then there's the great outdoors. London is blessed with a plethora of beautiful green spaces. Kiddies can charge about in the fresh air, climb trees and enjoy summer picnics. Some even have the most fantastic adventure playgrounds to across. Take them to Kensington Gardens to visit the Princess Diana Memorial Adventure Playground. Its giant pirate ship will keep youngsters occupied for hours. Battersea Park is also a lovely spot in the summer, with a children's zoo and a beautiful lake it's very popular with kids. As the weather heats up fractious children need to be cooled off. London has a wealth of al fresco water spots, perfect for swimming. From the murky depths of Hampstead Heath Ponds to the Parliament Hill Lido there are plenty of places to go for a plunge with the kids. London is staunchly proud of its wealth of world-famous attractions. Many of them are great places to take the children and some have even put on some very special child-friendly activities to celebrate the summer. Scale the aerial walkways at Kew Gardens or watch a swashbuckling jousting tournament in a beautifully medieval setting at the Tower of London.
