London area of Dulwich Village guide
What to do and where to stay in London's Dulwich Village neighbourhood
Leafy Dulwich Village is extremely popular for (largely middle class and well-off) families due to its calm nature, acres of open, green space, good schools and excellent transport links into London. The actual "village" part is remarkably compact, consisting of a couple of small streets and a cross roads. Here you can find a cluster of shops including an independent bookshop, a couple of butchers and delicatessens, a bakery, a florist, a café, a farmers' market on the last Sunday of each month, a handful of good restaurants and a Pizza Express. There are also three pubs in the area - The Crown & Greyhound, Dulwich Wood House and The Mansion. Just down the road from Dulwich Village is the Sir John Soane-designed Dulwich Picture Gallery, the world's first purpose-built art gallery, which holds one of the most celebrated collections of European Old Master paintings. Throughout the year the gallery - which also boasts a café and an adjoining chapel - mounts critically-acclaimed, crowd-pulling exhibitions. Opposite the gallery is the main entrance to Dulwich Park, a 72-acre park which is perfect for picnics, jogging or walking. Packed with historical features and some magnificent oak trees, the park also has a boating lake and numerous sporting facilities, such as tennis, bowling, football and cycle hire, making it a popular spot for families with young children. Near the park is the impressive Dulwich College, an independent school for boys which boasts some architecturally interesting buildings such as the imposing Great Hall.
