London area of Elephant and Castle guide
What to do and where to stay in London's Elephant and Castle neighbourhood
A wise man once said that all roads lead to Rome but a not-so-wise transport chief once made all buses lead to Elephant and Castle. We're a bit confused about why this might be; it couldn't possibly be for the 1960s faded red monstrosity that is the area's shopping centre, which sits proudly in between the two gigantic concrete roundabouts, Elephant's most famous landmarks, bound together by a labyrinth of dark, foreboding subways. But if the eternal talk of regeneration becomes more than just a pipedream, the Elephant will become more than a forgotten stop on the number 68 to Norwood. Because, let's face it, it's all about Location, Location, Location ''“ the Elephant already has one of London's finest attractions in the Imperial War Museum, and the Ministry of Sound is a Mecca glow-stick clubbers. It doesn't take Kirstie and Phil to work out that its proximity to Waterloo, Westminster and the South Bank means this is potentially a prime piece of real estate for shiny new hotels. And, perchance, maybe even a shiny new shopping centre. At least we can dream.
