London area of Fulham guide
What to do and where to stay in London's Fulham neighbourhood
This leafy area of west London is traditionally the home of the Sloane Ranger (whose affectionate nickname originated from Sloane Square). Today you’re more likely to find Australians and South Africans queuing outside the thumping bars around Fulham Broadway but the Sloanes are still to be found in back streets where smart townhouses go for over a million a piece. The area has its fair share of top class restaurants to cater for this type of resident. Football fans will know the area for its two clubs, Fulham, adjoining Bishops Park, and Chelsea, a short walk from Fulham Broadway Tube station, whose complex boasts bars, restaurants (as well as a burger van) and hotels. But be warned: on match days the surrounding streets get clogged with traffic; don’t even think about getting in a car just before kick-off. For a colourful grocery shop, North End Road market, here since the 1880s, offers every hue; the Sloanes may find it a little rough around the edges but they’re missing the point (and the bargains).
