Loving It!

28th January 2005

Why there's nothing better than Valentine's Day

It’s another year and another Valentine’s Day and, yes dear readers, I am still single. But this year’s Valentine vacuum will not be getting in the way of my fun (last year's speed-dating fiasco will NOT be repeated. Don't ask. Really don't.) and I have decided to head out with some other London ladies for a night tottering around the streets of Soho. This year, it appears that the clubs and pubs of London are finally going to look after us single types. No longer are we forced to go into hiding on V-Day while our coupled-up colleagues flaunt their double dating fun in our faces. Already I've been bombarded with offers for singles salsa nights, Anne Summers' parties and (shudder) 'Ladies Drink Free' club nights. Still, having the choices is what matters and Blockbuster and Victoria Wines won’t be on my Valentine's visit list this year.

In fact, I look forward to spending Valentine’s Day with my friends now. I would much rather go out for a giggle with the girls than linger over a wildly overpriced meal (he'll pay, but he'll make damn sure you know about it), feeling obliged to share my innermost feelings in a restaurant full of couples doing precisely the same thing.

We live in the most exciting city in the world - whatever the Sex and the City girls might think, New York doesn't even come close - and if there's one time you're sure to enjoy it, it's when you're single on Valentine's. All those self-absorbed couples are off together, and we're spared their endless conversations about house prices and wallpaper patterns. For us there's art, music and theatre in the evening, and as night falls we can slip into the beautiful things we bought in the sales, strap on our highest heels and turn Valentine's into the best weeknight party of the year.

Buy the London Eye for £200

Monopoly has had a modern refit for the first time in its long history in a new limited-edition out next month. New landmarks replacing utilities, include the London Eye and Wembley Stadium, while the train stations go out in favour of London’s four airports. (Can you name them?). ‘Go To Jail’ stays, as do Community Chest and Chance, although you now have a chance of winning the lottery or paying the Congestion Charge!

Sean 'Luvvie' Coombs

It is rumoured that one of the potential investors interested in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theatre sell off is the rap star Sean 'P Diddy' Coombes. So far, he has not revealed what he would intend to do with a West End theatre, but we're hoping to see productions of Bling Lear, It's Yo' Birthday Party and maybe even some Hip-Hopera. Sadly, given his experience in the night club industry, it is widely expected that, were he to buy a theatre, it would be turned into a clubbing venue.

More Tea Clipper?

One of London’s finest ships was saved this month by a lottery grant. The Cutty Sark, built in 1869, is the oldest surviving tea clipper. Experts estimated that the ship would only be able to remain open for another two years because of severe rusting in the hull. The grant means that the Cutty Sark will be preserved for future generations by suspending it in a Kevlar web, therefore taking the stress of the hull.
