A Dialogue with Nature: Romantic Landscapes from Britain and GermanyBritish and German Romantic landscape drawing is explored in the Courtauld exhibition through major drawings, watercolours and oil sketches by artists including JMW Turner, Samuel Palmer, Caspar David Friedrich and Karl Friedrich Lessing. By displaying these German and British artworks alongside each other for the first time, the former having been lent by the Morgan Library in New York, they can be seen to exemplify Caspar David Friedrich's understanding of the Romantic artist being in 'dialogue with nature'. Friedrich saw the importance of the imagination and close observation of the natural world as being the central elements of the Romantic concept of landscape. "The artist should not only paint what he sees before him, but also what he sees in himself," he said.

About Courtauld Institute Gallery

Manet's 'Bar at the Folies-Bergeres', Van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear' and Renoir's 'La Loge' are just a few of the celebrated artworks displayed at the Courtauld in the Strand Block of the glorious, 18th century Somerset House. 530 paintings, 7000 drawings and 15,000 prints combine to create one of the most notable collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Old Master works on display today.
