3D: Printing The FutureWhat was once a futuristic fantasy, 3D printing, is now a reality and the free Science Museum exhibition, 3D: Printing the Future, looks at the ways in which this emerging technology can be applied. An artificial hand and other body organs, aeroplane parts and a music box are just some of the ways in which 3D printing has been used. Examples given in the exhibition include an artificial hand belonging to carpenter Richard Van As who lost four fingers in an accident. Now he has a 3D printed artificial hand and has made the plans for it freely available online. The display shows how new technology has been used by different types of end user, by the medical industry, small start-ups, students and artists. One artwork on display is 'Inversive Embodyment' by Tobias Klein, a sculptural piece printed in nylon using data from MRI scans of Klein's own body combined with those of St. Paul's Cathedral. With its relatively afforability and potential for cost savings, 3D printing presents an exciting step forward into the future.
