Not one to do things by halves, British director Joe Wright is following his theatre directing debut in February - 'Trelawny of the Wells' at the Donmar Warehouse - with yet another theatre project this July. Best known for Anna Karenina, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice and the Brad Pitt Chanel No 5 adverts, Wright admits that these new projects are about as far away from his usual works as you can get: "I'm terrified. And that is another very good reason to do it." 'A Season in Congo' tells the true story of the 1960 rebellion against Belgian rule and the fall of legendary leader Patrice Lumumba. With the play featuring about 50 characters, it is an ambitious project that Wright intends to portray with the use of only eight actors, three dancers and musicians.
About The Young Vic
Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
