A Streetcar Named DesireGillian Anderson plays Blanche DuBois in a Young Vic staging of Tennessee Williams' classic 1947 play this summer. In A Streetcar Named Desire the drama begins as Blanche arrives to stay with her sister Stella and her husband, Stanley, after being evicted from her own home. The insecure ageing Southern belle soon clashes with the earthy Stanley, with sexual tension reaching boiling point. Gillian Anderson, best known as Special Agent Dana Scully to fans of the The X-Files as Blanche, has won accolades for her roles on stage and screen including a recent performance in BBC 2's psychological thriller, The Fall, BBC2's biggest new drama launch for a decade. Benedict Andrews, "the kind of director who ruffles feathers" (The Guardian), won the 2012 Critics' Circle Best Director Award for Three Sisters and this latest production is expected to be one of the most talked about shows of the year and quickly extended its run after the first booking period sold out. There is another way to get tickets to this sold-out production: via a lottery system - turn up at the Young Vic at 5pm each day and see if you'll be one of the lucky names drawn out of a hat at 5.30pm, 2 tickets allowed per person.

About The Young Vic

Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
