Location Map of A New World - England's First View of America

As America prepares to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first settlement of Jamestown, The British Museum takes a look through the eyes of those new arrivals. 'A New World: England's First View of America' explores a coast that some saw as an economic opportunity, some as a savage wilderness, and some as a new Eden, where man never fell from grace. The exhibition follows gentleman-artist John White's work based on the expeditions of Walter Raleigh. Artist White later became governor of the 'lost colony' of Roanoke, which disappeared without trace during one of his visits to the old country. These wonderful watercolours, on display for the first time in four decades, show the settlers' first contact with the Algonquin Indians, the fragile early days of the colony, and the beauty of the virgin landscape.
