Richard Egarr conducts the Academy of Ancient Music, the period instrument Cambridge based classical music orchestra, in a concert performance of JS Bach's masterpiece, St John Passion. For this special Easter concert at the Barbican, James Gilchrist takes on the role of St John the Evangelist and Matthew Rose plays Christ, with the mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly and acclaimed young soprano Elizabeth Watts making this an all-star cast. The piece, written by Bach to impress a new congregation, musically narrates the events leading to the crucifixion of Christ.
