She's America's most influential fashion editor, dubbed 'Nuclear Wintour' for her cool manner - said to have inspired the Meryl Streep character in The Devil Wears Prada. Now a new portrait of Anna Wintour,
Editor in Chief of American VOGUE, by American artist Alex Katz goes on display for the first
time at the National Portrait Gallery. After watching the documentary film, The September Issue, Katz noticed that - though usually hidden behind oversized dark glasses - Anna Wintour has lovely eyes, and here she is pictured without her signature shades. The portrait is one of a number of works by Katz displayed in two of the gallery's rooms with One Flight Up, 1968, a group
portrait of the New York intelligentsia at a cocktail party, the centrepiece of the first room. In the second are closely hung portraits of Katz's friends and family, including a portrait of his wife and life-long muse, Ada. The National Portrait Gallery exhibition follows a solo show at Timothy Taylor Gallery, Carlos Place which runs from 4 March to 9th April 2010 and features recent portraits of the artist's friends and family.
About National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery houses portraits of significant figures from the late 15th century to the present day. This isn't the place to come for serious works of exceptional artistic merit - the overriding aim of the National Portrait Gallery is to reflect the status of the sitter, not the artist - but where else in London could you hope to find The Beatles, Henry VIII, Sir Richard Branson and JK Rowling all hanging out together? The appeal of this gallery (opened in 1856) rests simply in its comprehensive commemoration of British history from the late 15th century to the present day through the medium of portraiture.
