Stephen Daldry's groundbreaking revival of An Inspector Calls was hailed as "the defining production of the 1990s" by The Daily Telegraph and now it's back for a limited West End season at the Novello to claim a new generation of converts to its theatrical brilliance. And it is worthy of such praise on a number of levels, not least of which is Ian MacNeil's striking, expressionistic set - an Edwardian doll's house tottering up from the cobblestones of a Blitzed street in 1945; the two ages setting up a pertinent tension for our Inspector to exploit. Because as the mysterious Inspector Goole systematically exposes the guilt of each member of the bubble-wrapped Birling family in the case of a working-class girl's suicide, he is expounding the cry of the post-war generation for a radical social conscience. The end is as dramatic as it is poignant - a "coup de theatre that would induce shivers down the spine however many times you saw the piece" (The Independent) - in this cracking, atmospheric, timeless thriller.
