Andreas Haefliger

The distinguished Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger returns to Queen Elizabeth Hall for the Southbank's International Piano Series. With his formidable technique and musicality, and his innate sense of architecture and phrasing, Haefliger made his name at the Juillard School in New York and was quickly recognised as a pianist of the first rank. "A fascinating artist" (The Guardian), "there seems to be no limit to the resources of Haefliger's touch" (The Independent). Here, the Swiss recitalist performs Mozart's neglected but delightful sonatas No.10 and No.11, renowned for their austere charm and elegance. Haefliger contrasts Mozart with the heady power of Wagner's Isolde's Liebestod, the dramatic aria from the opera Tristan und Isolde which communicates so poignantly the consummation of the two lovers' love in death. Finally, he tackles Schubert's B-flat Sonata, the last of the final piano trilogy composed by the Austrian and one of the most celebrated and respected in the composer's oeuvre.
