US three-piece Animal Collective only released their ninth studio album, the not-so-snappily-titled Merriweather Post Pavilion, in January and already it's been tipped as one of the albums of 2009, propelling the psychedelic "avant-garde Baltimore folk-rock sampler band" (The Guardian - who else?) onto the verge of a commercial breakthrough. Renowned for their trippy, bizarre yet catchy experimental sound, Animal Collective also put on a superb, colourful and lively show, with each band member assuming a strange moniker (one goes by Panda Bear) and actively encouraging strong audience participation. But be warned, go to the Brixton Academy with an open mind, for the band readily admit: "Don't be surprised if you come to see us and it's not what you thought it would be, and try not to get too upset."
