Well. knock me down with a .22 calibre rifle, Jane Horrocks is back at the Young Vic under the sparkling direction of Richard Jones in this spirited new production of Annie Get Your Gun. It promises to bring "the heart of Broadway and the raw edge of the Wild West" to the stage in this London revival of Irving Berlin's hit musical, featuring classic numbers There's No Business Like Show Business, I Got Lost in his Arms and Anything You Can Do. Horrocks brings her remarkable voice and eccentric manner to the role of Annie, while Julien Ovenden stars as her gun-toting partner Frank. The first part of the story is true: Annie Oakley and Frank Butler did meet at a shooting match in Ohio - and she was indeed a mean shot, winning the contest - but, whereas in real life, they fell in love over their smokin' guns and lived happily ever after, both joining Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, the musical version of their lives tells a rocky story of romance and rivalry. Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
