Book tickets for St Paul's Cathedral
Antony Gormley's wire sculpture Flare II is temporarily suspended from the Geometric Staircase at St Paul's Cathedral adding a modern element to the cathedral's already stunning staircase. The sculpture, which explores the relationship between art and faith, also gives people a chance to see the staircase - featured in the Harry Potter films - which is not usually open to the public. The Angel of the North sculptor took Christopher Wren's expert use of proportion and applied geometry to come up with his own interpretation to this unique space. Much as the steps appear to float without support, so too does the figure - possibly human, possibly ethereal - which is suspended within the wire structures of Flare II. The sculpture can be viewed during opening hours: Monday to Saturday 8.35am to 10.30am and 2pm to 3pm. However if this is your first visit to St Paul's you're best bet is to book a guided Supertour (for an additional ?3), available daily from Monday to Saturday at 10.45am, 11.15am, 1.30pm and 2pm, they last 90 minutes and take in the Cathedral church floor and the Crypt, the Chapel of St. Michael & St. George and the Quire, as well as the famous Geometric Staircase - all areas not usually available to the public.About St Paul's Cathedral
Being the cathedral of the capital city, St Paul's is officially the spiritual home of Great Britain. The funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill were conducted inside the church's fortress-like walls, as was the elaborate fairy-tale wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
