BabylonBabylon, city of ancient Mesopotamia - in what is now modern day Iraq - is explored in this exhibition at the British Museum. Artefacts and archaeological finds chart the ancient city's history and influence, starting with the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC). The king's Hanging Gardens of Babylon, built around 600 BC, were considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and have continued to inspire artists ever since. The significance of the city, home to the Tower of Babel, is revealed in the ancient sculptures, historical texts and clay tablets displayed here. In recent times what remains of the city in present-day Al Hillah, 55 miles south of Baghdad, has been damaged by war. This exhibition serves as a timely reminder of the importance of the preservation of this archaeological site.

About British Museum

If you wanted to thoroughly explore the British Museum, it would take months, if not years. Over seven millions objects from all over the world are housed in this impressive museum of human history and culture (many of the artefacts are stored underneath the museum due to lack of space).
