East meets West in May as the streets of 'Banglatown' Brick Lane fill with the sounds of celebration as crowds gather to ring in the Bengali New Year, Boishakhi Mela - it was renaming as 'Boishakhi Mela' instead of 'Baishakhi Mela', replacing the 'a' with an 'o'. Famous for its curry houses, Brick Lane is the obvious choice of venue to celebrate Boishakhi Mela. The party kicks off with a colourful parade, traditional costumes, elephants, tigers and rituals. The festivities for this year's event begins in Allen Gardens and journeys slowly through Brick Lane with a parade led by musicians, dancers and local children in dazzling traditional dress. A Bengali tiger, peacock boat, bridal ride, and street entertainers all mingle together, and stages in Allen Gardens, Weavers Fields and along Brick Lane feature literally hundreds of musicians and dancers. You can also sample the famous spicy baltis, birianis and vindaloos from the numerous restaurants and stalls which put Brick Lane on the map. About Brick Lane
London's own "Curry Mile", Brick Lane is home to so much more than first-rate spiced food, it also plays host to Jewish bagel shops, Indian sari silks and artists' studios - Gilbert and George and Tracey Emin are famously proud residents of the neighbouring streets. More about Brick Lane
