The flourishing technology-obsessed Italian art scene around the first two decades of the 20th century provides The Estorick with most of its excellent permanent collection. Obsessed with mass-production and warfare, it was also to produce the brilliant popular commentary on the Great War, which is explored in Barbed Wit. Inexpensive black-and-white postcards sit next to the bright sweeps of posters, and the subtle paintwork of original designs, in a show that mixes the bold excitement of futurism with the simple pleasures of satirical cartoons.
