Barocci: Brilliance and GraceSixteen spectacular altarpieces by Italian artist Federico Barocci go on display at the National Gallery in an impressive collection of works by the late 16th century artist who once created a fresco for the Casino of Pope Pius IV at the Vatican. Barocci: Brilliance and Grace gives visitors a chance to see his important altarpieces, devotional paintings and portraits alongside preparatory drawings and oil sketches. Barocci, a native of Urbino in central Italy, is best represented by his Marchigian altarpieces, including the famous 'Entombment' from Senigallia on Italy's Adriatic coast and 'Last Supper' from Urbino Cathedral, which are being shown outside Italy for the first time. Noted for his skill as a portraitist, Barocci often took inspiration from the people and animals around him, and his prolific studies attest to the time he spent on preparation.

About National Gallery

The National Gallery dominates London's Trafalgar Square with its neo-classical columns and portico designed by William Wilkins adjoining the square on its east side where it has been pedestrianised. Some of the finest examples of European art, ranging from 1260 to 1900, are included among the 2,300 paintings filling its halls and rooms. More about National Gallery
