Baroque 1620-1800: Style in the Age of MagnificenceThe opulence that the Baroque style is renowned for goes on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Around 200 objects from across Europe, dated between 1620 and 1800, show the fashion for elaborately enriched, gold encrusted art works typified by Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles. Put in historical context, these richly decorated works were a statement on the wealth of the continent at a time when absolute monarchs ruled vast swathes of land. The Catholic Church too held considerable power and had the financial muscle to commission the kind of sculptures and textiles displayed here. Alongside highly ornate pieces that once put the finishing touches to Versailles are religious paintings by Flemish artist Rubens, works from St Peter's Basilica in Rome as well as a gilded altarpiece from Mexico - an indication of the great lengths the Baroque influence reached.

About Victoria and Albert (V & A) Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum (or V & A as everyone calls it) was originally founded in 1852 to inspire and educate British designers and manufacturers. Today it houses over 4 million items spanning centuries and hundreds of cultures. The stunning collection covers European, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Islamic artefacts ranging from ceramics, glass, metalwork and sculpture to costume, armour, weaponry and furniture.
