Beethoven's Choral SymphonyIn aid of Lord Mayor's Appeal, St Paul's Cathedral will be hosting a special performance of Beethoven's Choral Symphony this May. Completed in 1824, Symphony No.9 marked the end of Beethoven's fascinating career and has become one of the most notable pieces of the Western classical repertoire. The work was also the first example of a major composer including vocals in a symphony. Beethoven took the words from the Ode to Joy, a 1785 poem written by Friedrich Schiller. The event at St Paul's will be conducted by Howard Williams and will feature the English Chamber Orchestra, Choir of the 21st Century and voices from Trinity Laban conservatoire of Music and Dance. Tickets can be booked through the Lord Mayor's Appeal website.

About St Paul's Cathedral

Being the cathedral of the capital city, St Paul's is officially the spiritual home of Great Britain. The funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill were conducted inside the church's fortress-like walls, as was the elaborate fairy-tale wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
