The production team that brought you English National Opera's award-winning Peter Grimes return to the London Coliseum to present Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd, an opera based on the short novel of the same name by Herman Melville. Starring Benedict Nelson (fresh from a star turn as Demetrius in 2011's A Midsummer Night's Dream) in the title role, Matthew Rose and Toby Spence, this re-imagining sees the award-winning director-conductor partnership of David Alden and Edward Gardner brought together again. This splendidly orchestrated all-male opera was originally commissioned for the original Festival of Britain in 1951. The opera focuses on the manner in which particular societies deal with outsiders and tells the tale of Billy Budd, a young man forced into naval service in the British navy in 1797.
