Birds Eye View Film FestivalBirds Eye View returns to the BFI Southbank, ICA, Barbican and Hackney Picturehouse for its 9th annual Film Festival celebrating, championing and showcasing women filmmakers. In 2013 the eight-day event celebrates the diverse range of work from the Arab world's most talented women, with 9 premieres, 10 exclusive Q&As, cutting-edge live music events. Birds Eye View launched the UK's first major film festival to showcase women's work (a bird's perspective) back in 2005, a response to the fact that only 6 per cent of directors and 12 per cent of screenwriters are female. This year, the festival opens with the UK premiere of When I Saw You, by Annemarie Jacir, who in 2007 became the first Palestinian woman to make a feature film. It also features the work of 24-year-old Hanan Abdullah, a first-time British-Egyptian director, and Al Midan - The Square by Arab-American director Jehane Noujaim, a documentary filmed in Cairo's Tahrir Square in 2011 which won an audience award at the Sundance Film Festival.

About BFI Southbank

Originally the National Film Theatre, the BFI Southbank is the perfect film buff's cinema, with three large screens and a smaller studio space showing up to 2000 films a year ranging from classics to independent movies as well as gala openings. It's also the heart of London's many film festivals, and the place to go to see obscure arts films, classics, and seasons of works by great directors. More about BFI Southbank
