British Sea PowerAfter working with musical arranger Peter Wraight (Matthew Herbert Big Band), the indie rock band British Sea Power, Brighton's answer to Arcade Fire, bring their invigorating live show to the Barbican, performing their favourite songs from a ten-year back catalogue in collaboration with Durham's own NASUWT Riverside Band in the premiere show of their Sea of Brass tour. The four-man indie rockers are certainly a breath of fresh air in this era of identikit guitar acts. Having gained mainstream success last year with the Mercury-nominated, top ten album Do You Like Rock Music?, BSP eschewed expectations and followed it up with a near-total instrumental soundtrack to a 1930s documentary about Irish fishermen. Such a move saw the BBC praise BSP for their "musical imagination and assurance" and their "originality and daring". But nothing should be too surprising from a band who have performed in the National History Museum and who, perhaps ironically, named their debut album The Decline of British Sea Power. Renowned for their elaborate and often bizarrely choreographed live performances - which cover costume changes and daring stunts - this gig should provide BSP, who once performed on Countryfile, further scope for their "inventive and intriguing" act.
