DV8's new dance production tackles some pretty serious subjects. The documentary style show looks at the way religion and culture have affected freedom of speech and censorship. The physical theatre group is led by Lloyd Newson, they approach the issues using a variety of medias including drama, dance, sound and video along with real interviews from influential political, religious and cultural personalities. It made its debut in the Sydney Opera House in August 2011 and then embarked on an international tour. The show refers to the events in 1989 when piles of copies of Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses were symbolically burnt and the controversy of 2005 when cartoons of Islamic prophet Muhammad were printed in a Danish newspaper. A particularly poignant moment features a graphic re-enactment of the murder of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch film-maker. Hence, the over 16s only recommendation. Can We Talk About This? will be appearing at the Lyttelton Theatre for a two week run March 2012.
About Lyttleton Theatre
The Lyttelton is one of three theatres which make up the National Theatre. It was built in a proscenium style, but has thoroughly modern sightlines and acoustics. There really is no bad seat here as there are no circle rails or view-blocking pillars. More about Lyttleton Theatre
