Bizet's popular and passionate opera Carmen is the first fully staged opera to be shown at The O2 and is being performed just three times this May with a cast of over 200 performers, including dancers, acrobats and fire-eaters. This lavish production of the doomed love affair between a soldier and a gypsy is the result of a partnership between director David Freeman and promoter Raymond Gubbay who have previously worked on similarly large-scale operas including Madam Butterfly, Tosca and Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall. Freeman found fame in the UK in the mid-1980s with his The Opera Factory at the Southbank Centre, "Britain's most successfully unorthodox opera company" (The Independent) and continues to push the boundaries. This in-the-round production, sung in English, with colourful sets recreating the festivities outside of the bullring in Seville is set to be nothing short of stunning. Principle roles are shared by Cristina Nassif and Louise Poole (as Carmen) and John Hudson and Philip O'Brien (as Don Jose) who are accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gareth Hancock.About The O2 Arena
The centrepiece of the newly redeveloped Millennium Dome is the O2 Arena, the first purpose-built music venue in London. With a capacity of 23,000, it is already offering the rather soulless Wembley Arena some serious competition. Big name acts such as The Rolling Stones, The Killers, Justin Timberlake, Girls Aloud and Tina Turner have performed on stage, with the likes of Beyonce, AC/DC, Kings of Leon and Britney Spears set to appear in 2009.
