Moving Nina Bawden's story of wartime evacuation Carrie's War - inspired by her own childhood experience - from the page to the stage has been a limited success. Hampered by its "slow-moving plot" (The Stage), what works in the intricate weaving of a novel needs a different treatment to create a theatrical spark. Yet for all its plodding - "leaving very little to the imagination" said The Guardian when it opened at the Lilian Baylis Theatre in 2006 - Emma Reeves' adaptation, showing for a limited season at the Apollo Theatre, is a faithful rendition of what is a touching tale of childhood struggles and adventures during the Second World War. It "never falters in conjuring up with gentle pathos a sense of the troubled times" (The Stage) and the original cast, many of whom are returning for this new run, delivered some lovely performances. Prunella Scales, best known for playing Sybil in Fawlty Towers, is a welcome addition as the misty Mrs Gotobed, adding a touch of bygone charm.
