This two-night Charity Comedy Festival at the Bloomsbury Theatre features some top comedic talent performing in aid of the UCLH Cancer Centre. Pick of the bunch on the opening Tuesday night is the deliciously camp Tom Allen, the man behind the TNT Show's Dictionary Corner sketch. Droll, intelligent and effortlessly laconic, Allen "is one of the more adorable stand-ups" on the circuit, "his outfit as dapper as his patter, he has something of Graham Norton about him, but with a less manic, more Coward-esque twist" (The Telegraph). Fuzzy haired TV presenter Alex Zane headlines on Wednesday night, but the pick of the bunch for us is the cerebral, surreal and imaginatively inventive Dan Antopolski, whose celebrated hedgehog gag (so simple yet so funny) won an award for the best joke at last year's Edinburgh festival. "A dazzling stage presence and a great store of one-liners," says The Times. Compere for both nights is the loud but likable New Zealander Jarred Christmas, of Pot Noodle advert fame and, more recently, Big Brother's Big Mouth. Wednesday 22nd September:
Jarred Christmas (compere)
Andi Osho, Tom Allen, Ninia Benjiman, Stewart Francis, Andrew Lawrence, Tony Law, Pete Johansson
Thursday 23rd September:
Jarred Christmas (compere)
Alex Zane, Dan Antopolski, Tim Clark, Ben Norris, Josh Howie, Ian Stone, Dave Fulton
*With one in three people affected by cancer worldwide, the cause for this mini festival is a good one. UCLH is currently building one of the top cancer centres in Europe and is due to open in 2012 but at a cost of ?100 million. Your ticket will help contribute to the ?30m target set by the UCLH Charitable Foundation.*
About Bloomsbury Theatre
Owned and part-funded by University College London, the Bloomsbury was completed in 1968 on the site of a bomb-damaged church. The years have not been kind to this style of architecture and its plate glass and dark brick front now looks drab and un-theatrical. More about Bloomsbury Theatre
