Last staged in the West End back in 2012 - when it concluded a 15-year run - hit musical Chicago returns to London for the first time in five and half years with a staging at the Phoenix Theatre. Written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the long running show tells the saga of a chorus girl attempting to get away with murder with the help of her sleazy lawyer, Billy Flynn. The original show was a flop in the 1970s as audiences found the subject matter too bleak. However, recent Broadway and London revivals of Chicago have been huge successes, spawning the film version which swept the boards at the Oscars. Having stuck to the winning formula, this London revival is sure to be no different. Despite pared-back staging, audiences are fully immersed in the action, whisked away to 1920s Chicago thanks to memorable show tunes, show-stopping set pieces and slick performances from Chicago veterans Ruthie Henshall, Josefina Gabrielle and Sarah Soetaert, who steals the show with her goofy interpretation of Roxie Hart. Scantily dressed dancers will have you wanting to get dressed up and hit the town while the talented orchestra, who are placed front and centre and given a couple of show-stealing moments, expertly navigate the action. Whether you're a long-time fan or a first timer, this Chicago revival is guaranteed to have you happily foot tapping along. Fancy a pre-theatre dinner?
