Chinese New Year in London is one of the most spectacular in the West with over 300,000 people taking part in the celebrations across the capital last year. This year, the Year of the Snake, Chinese New Year falls on 10th February 2013 and a number of festivities through Chinatown, Leicester Square, Shaftesbury Avenue and Trafalgar Square will be taking place. Festivities begin at 10am with a parade which begins at Duncannon Street at 10am, moving along Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue. An official opening ceremony then takes place in Trafalgar Square with speeches from special guests. Once officially opened, the real celebrations kick off with Dragon dancing, music and performances on the Trafalgar Square stage. Join the throng in a stall-covered Chinatown for fun and firecrackers on and around Gerrard Street, Lisle Street and Shaftesbury Avenue where there are impromptu parties, food stalls and lion dancing.
About Trafalgar Square
Lord Nelson, Britain's greatest military hero, and the mighty lions that surround him, pay testament to the position of Trafalgar Square at the heart of the capital, the heart of the nation, and, at one time, the heart of an empire that controlled three fifths of the world.
